Devindra Hardawar04.12.2021Report: MediaTek takes over as world's largest smartphone chipset vendor
Move over, Qualcomm: According to a new report from research firm Counterpoint, MediaTek has overtaken the San Diego-based chipmaker to become the world’s biggest vendor of smartphone chipsets by market share. While Qualcomm (understandably) held onto its title as the biggest purveyor of 5G-friendly chipsets, Counterpoint’s data suggests that more than 100 million MediaTek-powered smartphones were sold in Q3 2020 — a roughly five percent increase compared to this time last year. Counterpoint’s report added some valuable context to MediaTek’s most recent earnings release, in which it reported revenues of NT$97,275 million — a boost of nearly 50 percent over the year-ago quarter.

Steve Dent08.06.2020MediaTek's latest processor will help take dual-SIM 5G phones mainstream
MediaTek is trying to make 5G more accessible on less-than-flagship phones with the launch of the Dimensity 820 processor. It has the latest carrier aggregation tech that offers improved coverage and seamless handovers between 5G coverage areas, faster download speeds, dual-SIM tech and voice over new radio (VoNR), the 5G equivalent to VoLTE tech.
Steve Dent05.18.2020It took Google months to patch a serious Android security flaw
Google has patched a critical security flaw that affects millions of Android devices with chipsets from MediaTek, XDA Developers revealed today. The vulnerability is a rootkit lodged in the CPU's firmware. It allows a simple script to root Android devices that use nearly any of MediaTek's 64-bit chips, so it has compromised hundreds of budget and mid-range smartphone, tablet and set-top box models, XDA says.
Christine Fisher03.03.2020The first dual-SIM 5G phones could arrive in early 2020
Sure, you can buy a 5G phone right now if you're not picky, but for many that's just not an option without dual-SIM support -- some people need the flexibility, whether it's to use the lowest-cost service or just having separate work and personal lines. If you're one of them, you might have that option soon. MediaTek has formally revealed its previously-teased 5G system-on-chip, now called the Dimensity 1000, and it's billed as the first SoC to support 5G on two SIMs. You could have two lines without having to compromise on data speeds.
Jon Fingas11.26.2019Intel teams with MediaTek to create 5G modems for PCs
Intel has backed away from 5G in smartphones, but it's determined to bring the technology to PCs -- and it's recruiting an ally to ensure that happens. The chip giant is teaming up with MediaTek to create 5G modems for laptops and other PCs that can benefit from an always-on connection. MediaTek will be the one to develop and deliver the tech. Intel will define the 5G solution spec, provide optimization, validate designs and lend the support needed to integrate the modems into shipping computers.
Jon Fingas11.25.2019MediaTek's latest phone CPUs are built for gaming
MediaTek's mobile processors are more commonly associated with budget smartphones than gaming, but it's determined to change your mind. The chip designer has introduced a Helio G90 family of processors with performance and features intended with cutting-edge games in mind. Both the G90 and G90T are eight-core chips that use 2.05GHz Cortex-A76 cores for demanding tasks and Cortex-A55 for lighter duties, complete with Mali-G76 graphics (up to 800MHz) and up to 10GB of LPDDR4x memory. Those aren't too special, though -- it's what you won't see that might make the difference.
Jon Fingas07.30.2019MediaTek's 5G chipsets are ready for cheaper next-gen phones
The first wave of 5G devices carried a high premium, but MediaTek is working hard to ensure that budget handsets aren't left behind. The company has announced a new 5G-compatible system-on-chip that will offer decent performance and 5G connectivity to lower-end devices. The elegantly-named Integrated 5G SoC combines MediaTek's M70 5G modem with Arm's Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU.
