Samsung unveiled the latest iterations its Galaxy Note line during which time the company showed off a plus-sized phone that costs more than a laptop -- specifically, the brand new Book S laptop debuting at the same dang press conference. That ain't right. And that ain't all. Take a look.

Our readers review the Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was largely positive; reviewer Cherlynn Low found the handset impressive, calling it "one of the best phones of the year." With a "brilliant display," hearty battery life and speedy performance, the Note 9 did plenty to earn its lofty score of 92. Our December call for readers to submit their own reviews of the Note 9 also produced impressive results: We saw nearly 120 new scores and reviews for the flagship phone, most of them agreeing with Cherlynn. But they also tended to be harsher about the phone's shortcomings, resulting in an average user score of 87.

Just a couple of weeks after the Galaxy Note 9 was revealed, Samsung's latest flagship smartphone is now available at retailers and through carriers. The handset includes a 6.4-inch screen, stereo speakers, a 4,000mAh battery that should keep you going all day and 128GB or 512GB of storage, which is expandable using microSD cards.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. the competition: Big and getting bigger

Phone screens continue to get larger, with many flagship phones regularly breaking the 6-inch mark. Still, the Note 9's slightly larger display and bigger battery might provide the edge it needs to succeed, in addition to its ever-trusty S Pen. To see how the Note 9's specs stack up against some of its leading competition (like its sibling, the Galaxy S9+), we've assembled the relevant details in the table below. Of course, while specs are interesting, they're ultimately not the final word on the phone's real-world performance. For that verdict you'll have to wait for our full review in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. last year's Note 8: What's changed?

    by

Last year's Galaxy Note 8 largely succeeded at redeeming the Note line in the wake of its predecessor's battery troubles. The new Note 9 doesn't have as much pressure on it this time around, so the changes are a lot less dramatic than the addition of a dual camera and virtual assistant. Still, there are a few things worth noting here: The cameras have gotten a bit of a bump to sit comfortably alongside those on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ while the Note 9's 6.4-inch screen size is also a nice advantage. To get the full details on all the small but key changes to Samsung's newest S Pen-equipped handset, check out our spec chart below, and stay tuned in the coming weeks for our full review.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 still has game one year later

The Galaxy Note 8's job was not only to serve the legions of smartphone users who demand S Pens but also to rehabilitate Samsung's image after the Note 7, to prove that the company had bounced back from a very public failure. On both counts, I'd argue the Note 8 succeeded. With Samsung gearing up to reveal its next-generation Galaxy Note, we thought it'd be appropriate to check in with 2017's Note 8 to see just how well it holds up against a year's worth of smartphone progress.

  • Samsung accidentally leaked the Galaxy Note 9 again

Oof. We're used to leaks from factory floors, retailers and, well, those who make a living from the dark art, but the manufacturer itself? That's unusual. And multiple leaks? That's just embarrassing. Today, Samsung accidentally posted a video for its next flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 9. The brief teaser shows the overall design -- which Samsung had already leaked through a pre-order announcement -- and the yellowish S-Pen that ships with the blue model. It also confirms that a 512GB version will be available, with support for up to 512GB microSD cards. No huge surprises, then, but perhaps they're detailed in a different Galaxy Note 9 teaser?

Galaxy Note 9 might be the first place you play ‘Fortnite’ on Android

The world's biggest game could be exclusive to Samsung's Galaxy Note 9. Both 9to5Google and XDA Developers have independent sources claiming that Fortnite will be a 30-day exclusive to Samsung's upcoming phablet, with other Android devices getting it later. XDA Developers even goes so far as to say the phone's launch video will be based around developer Epic Games' free-to-play shooter, and that the game will come pre-installed on the handset. There are rumors that the new Bluetooth Smart S Pen will be integrated into play somehow. A certain blue-haired streamer might even be involved. Oh, and if you're a Samsung DeX fan, this will apparently work with that too.

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Note 9 in Brooklyn on August 9th

It wouldn't be summer without a big Samsung announcement, and now we know when it's going down The company just sent out invitations out for an Unpacked event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 9th (as expected) and even by Samsung standards, that's a pretty massive venue. Then again, Samsung has some pretty dramatic tendencies when it comes to putting on launch events -- after all, this is the company that turned a phone launch into a sort of faux-musical. If the invitation is any indication, though, the new Galaxy Note 9 will be the star of the show.

Samsung has been teasing its upgraded Bixby 2.0 assistant for several months now, but when is it actually going to show up in something you can buy? It shouldn't take too much longer. The company's AI research center head Gray G. Lee told the Korea Herald that the new AI helper will arrive with the upcoming flagship phone in the second half of 2018 -- in other words, the next Galaxy Note. While Lee didn't show all of Samsung's cards, he promised better natural language processing, faster responses and better results in noisy environments.

In addition to the honor of representing their homelands, this year's Winter Olympic athletes will also receive something else: a limited-edition Galaxy Note 8. Unlike Samsung's first Olympic phone, though, it's unlikely that this version will ever go on sale to the public. To own one, you have to be a world-class athlete or an Olympic staff member whose job is to support world-class athletes. To play with one, though, you just have to write things on the internet, so here we are.

The Galaxy Note 8 vs. the Note 7: What's changed?

Last year the Galaxy Note 7 was actually one of our favorite phones until it started exploding, so we're happy to see Samsung's line of large-screen-with-stylus handsets make its return today with the Note 8. While it would have been easy enough to simply change out the battery and call it a new model, there are a few other changes worth noting. That includes the dual camera, which we've never seen in a Samsung phone before, and the Note now comes packed with AI assistant Bixby. While we certainly hope you turned in your Note 7 during the recall, check out our chart below to see what upgrades await if you pick up a Note 8 when it comes out, as well as if this new phone has the potential to become one of our faves of 2017.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 packs a giant display and a smarter pen

It's been a long, long year for Galaxy Note fans. The Note 7 launched with much fanfare last summer, only to die in spectacular fashion as systemic battery flaws (not to mention hasty decision-making) forced Samsung to recall the fire-prone handset twice and eventually kill it off. Unless you went out of your way to get the Fan Edition, you've had to go without a modern Note for a long time. At last, though, a replacement is here: Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note 8, and it might finish the redemption process that started with the Galaxy S8.

Take an early look at the Galaxy Note 8 in 'Midnight Black'

While the Galaxy Note 8 won't launch until August 23rd, noted leaker Evan Blass aka EVLeaks has just posted a full render of the device in its Midnight Black color. Closely matching renders seen before, it takes the Infinity Design seen in Samsung's well-received Galaxy S8 and S8+ and stretches it across a larger frame. The event invite promised we'd "Do Bigger Things," but other than the usual Note features like a stylus it's hard to say exactly what will be special about this phone -- other than a slightly smaller battery to avoid last year's explosive issues.

Samsung's next large-screened phone is on its way, as invites have just gone out for the company's Unpacked event on August 23rd. A teaser image promises to "Do bigger things," which is about what we'd expect from the followup to last year's Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Rumors indicate that the Galaxy Note 8 we're expecting to see will rock a larger 6.3-inch version of the Galaxy S8's Infinity Display, dual rear cameras and 6GB of RAM.

Samsung ready to relaunch the Galaxy Note line in August

Samsung isn't letting the Galaxy Note 7's battery failure hinder the release schedule for its next pen-toting smartphone. A Reuters source understands that Samsung is planning a New York City launch event for the Galaxy Note 8 in August, or roughly around the same time as it introduced the Note 7 last year. The tipster hasn't revealed many details of the phone itself, but does appear to corroborate earlier rumors. It'll have a curved screen slightly larger than the 6.2-inch display on the Galaxy S8 Plus, the source says, and there should be an iPhone 7 Plus-like dual camera setup on the back.

After the furor over flaming phones had mostly subsided, Samsung moved to end the Note 7 fiasco once and for all. Last Sunday, Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh -- along with a cadre of technical experts -- laid out exactly what caused the company's incredibly well-received phone to fail so spectacularly. In doing so, he sought to move Samsung past the mess that had consumed it for the past five months.

Samsung will keep using the Galaxy Note brand

Now that Samsung has pinpointed the suspected causes of the Galaxy Note 7's battery fires, there's one question on many people's minds: will the Galaxy Note brand carry on, or is it tarnished forever? If you're a fan, you can relax. The company's DJ Koh tells CNET that the Note name is very much alive. There are "lots and lots of loyal customers," he says. And while there wasn't much doubt that there would be a Note successor this year, Koh isn't shy about hinting at a "better, safer and very innovative" Galaxy Note 8.
