iPhone firmware 2.0 hands-on

- Exchange is so on! Changes are pushed over the network, but over WiFi it does check-ins, so it's not as instantaneous.
- There's no contact search that we can see, so far. Maybe that only gets turned on if you have thousands of contacts (which we definitely do not).
- There's a new button in the calendar, but we don't know what it is and can't make it do anything.
- The App Store is there, of course, but doesn't do anything yet (except error out that it can't connect).
- Wondering when Apple will make good on its agreement to license Cisco technology? Well, the branded Cisco VPN screen has definitely been added to the VPN settings. We couldn't really test this one, but assume it works as advertised. We don't yet know if it supports SecurID or other hardware token authenticators.
- Parental controls most certainly work. Marvel as we turn off YouTube!
- You can now order your preferred WiFi networks.
- In addition to having a new sideways scientific mode(!), the basic calculator now does commas and has new, useful functions for the math nerds; both the calc and the iTunes icons have changed.
- By far our favorite new feature is multi-select in mail, though. Now when you hit edit you can select as many messages as you want and delete or move them as a group. Friggin' finally. Now where's that two-pane client?
Update: Video after the break!

Until there is a BT keyboard driver it's a toy.
Sander @ Mar 19th 2008 3:42AM
Perhaps I am really stupid, but the NO SIM in the left right corner, is that because the phone is hacked, or is it with the 2.0 version possible to use the phone without a sim card?:D (wich makes it actually an iPod touch..)
dvmrp @ Mar 19th 2008 3:47AM
still no a2dp?
Amit @ Mar 19th 2008 6:48AM
I dont understand why A2DP is still not on the list of updates by Apple...
Beau @ Mar 19th 2008 10:03AM
Would you guys be so nice as to see if there's an iPod Touch compatible version of v2, as I'm assuming you've only got the iPhone copy.
Oh one thing that would absolutely make my day, could anyone PLEASE send me a copy of the Calculator app?
It's the only iPhone/iPod Touch calculator app that has 'Pi'.
Many, Many thanks,
Beau

On picture 22, what screen is that? It MUST be the App Store, because the "featured" icon is the same as in youtube, and neither iTunes or Youtube have a "genres" box at the bottom... BUT on that phone there is an "Updates" button- what does this mean- OTA Firmware updates? WiFi Firmware updates? or just Application updates?
Kento Ito @ Mar 19th 2008 10:22AM
3G on iPhone?
You have to wait till the following two events:
WWDC 2008 (with immediate availability)
or
Apple Fall Music Event (when all the new iPods are introduced)

That's great news!!!!

I would love to be able to control my apple TV from my iphone:
1) using my iphone as a remote control, instead of the dinky apple tv remote control, would provide a nice UI.
2) being able to be out and about and rent a movie, or add a podcast, etc. and have it ready on my apple tv when i come home.

Will the 2.0 upgrade in June allow for MMS?
Thanks.

Please tell me support for Bluetooth GPS receivers has been added? Please?
I don't get why this hasn't already been implemented, it would give Apple and Google the chance to use the "iPhone Army" owners who use Bluetooth GPS receivers to make their Location features much more accurate, in locations where they know at least 1 iPhone user lives. More accurate Locate Me features and Bluetooth GPS support would seem like a win/win for everyone.

I guess A2DP wld be announced someday and everyone in the crowd will go crazy and cheer and clap.
Not because its amazing, but becos its finally here.
But for now, I'm happy with using earphones (since I am assuming using A2DP will drain my battery faster).
- I'm not an iPhone user btw, I live in Asia, and A2DP does really drain the juice on my SE P990i.

iPhone is currently a glorified iPod Touch which is brick sized in comparison. Too thick, no 3G Capability, and if used in Australia, can not be configured for Optus Zoo, Planet 3, Vodafone Live... let alone mobile web browsing of any sort unless using WiFi. Gimme my MacBook for internet browsing at home anyday. Even if you could browse sites over the mobile network, it would be slow as all hell using EDGE/GPRS. And where's the MMS capability? Come on Apple... stop screwing around with pissy little software changes and give us...
3G Capability
Configurable Packet Data Accounts
MMS Capability (without 3rd party apps which require jailbreaking)
Speaking of jailbreaking... STOP LOCKING YOUR SHIT DOWN!!!
Oh... and don't you f***ing DARE make it exclusive to an Australian network when you release it over here... I work at a mobile dealer... and you'll cop nothing but negativity from me and hundreds of other dealers.
Honestly... So there you go. 5 points to fix and you'll smash everyone out of the water.
Oh... and it would be nice if we could get an inbuilt navigation app which supports external Bluetooth GPS Receivers (but not essential)

My company's Exchange server does not support IMAP or POP, so I'm currently unable to access my mail via iPhone. Once the ActiveSync upgrade takes place, does anyone know if I'll be able to access it, or will my server admin have to go in and make other setting changes? Would it still require IMAP to be enabled?
Thx for any help.

sectshun8 @ Apr 5th 2008 11:01PM
Um... being able to access the 3G network is not going to be in a firmware update. From what I've read, the current iPhones don't have the internals to get on 3G... the next evolution in iPhones are rumored to have the capability. Firmware doesn't fix all the problems... if the hardware can't support it, firmware means nothing.

I have never known a bunch of more ungrateful and moaning people than iPhone users!
They all Kick And Scream until an iPod Phone, is released as so you can stop carrying 2 devices and apple do that, then you’re not happy that it doesn’t have this feature or that one, so apple release updates to try and please and now everyone is moaning for 3G which not one of you have a clue is coming or not, yet comment like you do.
Look at this for £269/$399 you get the best looking, easiest to use, most feature laden phone and if you Jailbreak and unlock you get that sim free with no commitment to contracts
An 8GB Nokia N95 would cost you £450/$550 and isn’t as good as the iPhone for use and features, maybe you should grow up and stop expecting things like a child would, and accept that you have something great which you all asked for originally to demand Apple put 3G in or you won’t buy or upgrade, seriously who do you think you are does Steve Jobs give a shit about you and you wants and needs, its ok to want features but to demand! I’m sure 3G and everything you demand will be there some time but why cry like babies over it??

I thought I would share it with you all.
PS: they have a pretty cool video too of the 2.0 firmware on their site :D

I AM SO SICK OF THIS NO 3G "Protest" by users.
It is o bvious Apple knew people would cry about no 3G so what did they do, they put in WiFi!
Just as AT&T 3G isn't everywhere, WiFi isn't everywhere but is in more locations than 3G.
At the same time, WiFi on the iPhone loses about 4 Hours of Battery Life (if talking on the phone straight) and its the same with 3G. Cheap Battery Life.
Steve Jobs knows what he is doing.
p3t3b2 @ Apr 15th 2008 11:57PM
Check your facts, ATT 3G may not be everywhere, however, Sprint and Verizon has nationwide 3G, Sprint has EVDO Rev A in more spots than Verizon has Rev 0. Wifi is NOT nation wide Sprints EVDO is. EVDO you can get on a subway, high up in the mountains, EVDO can permeate through buildings, WIFI CANNOT!
Even when ATT rolls out it's 3G it will be no where near Sprints EVDO Rev A!
Right now I'm getting 878 download and 513 upload on REV A!

Chris @ Jan 4th 2009 1:48PM
Jamal Anderson, just b/c you have low expectations for your phone, why should the rest of us???
3G is much faster!!!
3G can be used while you are on a voice call (great if you are using Gmaps or browsing the internet and taking a phone call over a bluetooth headset)
3G does not consume as much battery life as wifi!
3G auto/switches to EDGE/GPRS when not in use so as to conserve battery life!!!
If the iPhone had 3G, it would be a killer phone. You may not have shopped around, but the rest of us have. We've seen the advantages first hand, and going back to using an EDGE only phone is like being in the stoneage. Analogous would be you going back to using your Motorola RAZR or whatever crappy phone you had before you bought your iPhone. My HTC Touch Cruise (using Opera 9.5 beta) loads entire pages before the iPhone loads the first image on a site....

Cingular HSDPA
Seeking comprehensive source for real-world user tests. Some users on HoFo are reporting 600k-1Mbps. PC World Review suggests not up to par with EVDO. Another article. HSDPA in some cases may have better latency than EVDO Rev 0 but not better than EVDO Rev A coming next year.
Performance results from.....
Verizon:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/archive/myvzw.com
Sprint:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/archive/spcsdns.net
To test yourself... (please record results to archive)
http://dslreports.com/stest/
Methodology: Filtered out are unrealistic results (dl over 2.4Mbps and ul over 150K) and multiple entries by zipcode within a few hours. For duplicate zips near same time, the highest speed was kept. For registered users posted, only the highest score was kept. This should give more realistic averages and factor out people who test multiple times in a row. These are all entries that have over 130Kbit/sec. The assumption is, if under 130K, it might have been a 1xRTT connection.
________________4.0 Terms of Service________________
Sprint
EVDO Terms of Service: No specific restrictions other than unlawful abuse. Sprint actually promotes streaming video and online game use. Server-services, such as running a web server, are not allowed. Sprint does state the right to cancel service for any reasons but there are no known sources of Sprint sending letters for TOS violation if having the proper EVDO account.
Verizon
EVDO Terms of Service: Not allowed... Legal downloading or streaming music/movies/radio, VoIP, online games, webcams, among other things are "officially" not allowed. Verizon has sent letters to some users for TOS violation with specific dates mentioned for cancelling service. Their appears to be a soft limit of about 5GB-10GB/month, which is still quite a bit, but might trigger a cancellation notice.
Cingular
HSDPA Terms of Service: Appears less restrictive than Verizon but more restrictive than Sprint. Details here.
________________5.0 Rates________________
Sprint
EVDO Rates:
- Laptop/USB cards $60/month w2yr contract, no contract $80/month. No Sprint voice acct needed for either!
- PowerVision phones start at $15/month, includes unlimited data/browsing within phone (and PDA phones).
- USB or Bluetooth tethering to laptop officially available on all PowerVision phones with two plan options...
--- $25/month for 40MB with per KB charge that caps to $70/month OR

- Will EVDO/1xRTT roam on Alltel in late 2006 at no charge. Alltel EVDO/1xRTT maps
- Offers three nextgen RevA cards now and more coming in Oct/Nov
Verizon
EVDO Rates:
- Laptop cards $60/month w2yr contract otherwise $80/month. The $60/month requires a cell phone account, the $80 does not.
- VCast phones start at $15/month but unlimited data within a PDA phone is $45/month.
- USB tethering to laptop officially available on new BlackBerry EVDO phone and some smartphone phones - $45/month for unlimited data + $15/month to tether = $60/month.

Hi just reading through the comments as I was curious about the 2.0 update and it seems that alot of you are missing the whole point of apples market strategy.
Basically this APP app is there to make money, at the cost of the community we make the apps apple makes the money, currently for those unaware if you have a jailbroken iphone you can send MMS if its so important you can also use IM native or through MEEBO if you prefer.
I bought my iphone knowing the following.
You cannot forward SMS, you cannot send MMS (RETAIL SETTINGS)
You cannot copy & paste. You cannot watch flash videos and you cannot wipe your ass with it.
Yet I still like it and use it everyday.
Things I would like built into the software update! Windows Live, Google - Writer, Calendar, News ETC with a better interface... MMS, FLASH SUPPORT, Bluetooth support for file sending zoom on the camera heck send me a new hardware model with a 5/6 meg camera with flash 60 gig hdd with hard drive support jeez it aint gonna happen this thing is corporate it will remain that way until they cannot sell it to business's anymore and then and only will you see the silly little niggly things appear if they havent been created by the community first.
The APP app take the weight of apple they wont support the apps so they dont get hassle and they can concentrate on the firmware, bootloader updates stopping hackers etc. These are things I have come to accept I think alot of you should as well if you want WM feature buy a WM Smartphone or a HTC but you wont get a 16gb HDD will all your music on and you wont be able to watch a movie on the train! or send a picture you just took to your friends of another friend passed out with a stick up in his ass because he was drunk and passed out.
Anyway far to late going bed have fun killing each other over update that your childrens children will be waiting for.
Tony @ May 22nd 2008 2:08PM
Did they fix any of the other problems with the new iPhone, or is it all hype about the new features that should've been included in the first place? Here are a few basic ones that bug me...
1. Have MMS messages been enabled, or is it still SMS texting where you can't send or receive picture text messages?
2. Can BlueTooth now connect to other devices (other than some headsets), or is it still crippled?
3. What about the the inability to group contacts and set ring-tones for everyone in that group?
Chris @ May 22nd 2008 6:52PM
A2DP???????? Any news... can we finally stream music in good quality to stereo bluetooth headphones?
What about Bluetooth voice dialing? Is it finally supported?
These are some probably the biggest things (3G & copy/paste are the others) holding me back right now. I guess it'll be the iPhone 3.0 that replaces my HTC Touch Cruise.
