Apple iPod nano now comes in 1GB
It was a quiet
introduction with no announcement, no fanfare, and certainly no warning -- not that we hadn't expected this -- but
today Apple threw up a 1GB nano on their store for
$149. Yup, same nano we've all come to know and, um, wipe smudges and scratches constantly. Thing is, we know that
Apple doesn't like making a big deal when they start phasing out old products, and from the look of things that could
be what they're doing with the shuffle, which got a price slash itself, the 512MB version down to $69 and the 1GB
version down to a Benjamin. Somehow we can imagine they'll be selling a lot more nanos than ever before, and they probably won't be of the 2GB/$200 or
4GB/$250 variety, feeling us?

damit, I was hoping for the usual apple-style suprise, no new announcements. Is that 22nd February press event confirmed fake?
Azhar @ Feb 7th 2006 9:24AM
Whats wrong with Apple, even the 1 billion songs has no hype they must be having something huge in the works, building up suspense.
John Doe @ Feb 7th 2006 9:29AM
I don't expect the shuffle to be totally phased out. The bottom of the barrel 512MB $70 variant could stick around. $150 for many is still too much for an MP3 player.
jared @ Feb 7th 2006 9:31AM
headline should have been "iPod Shuffle now comes in $69 version." :)
Paul @ Feb 7th 2006 9:38AM
I am psyched. I am going to replace my recently damaged Nano with a cheap Shuffle now. The Nano is too delicate, especially since I ran it through the wash. Doh! I almost bought a new Shuffle last night and decided to wait for the new announcemet. Now it's $20 cheaper, I am getting it.
David @ Feb 7th 2006 9:54AM
damn...I've been waiting for the eventual 6GB nano before getting one to replace my mini...i'm more than content with my 1GB nano
hollerf @ Feb 7th 2006 9:55AM
I just bought a 512 a month ago for 89 bucks! Argh. I guess it isn't the first time I've been burned by Apple -- and it won't be the last. When it comes to Macs, I'm a glutton for punishment.
DCFC Fan @ Feb 7th 2006 9:59AM
QUESTION!? I've saved my tickets for over a year at Dave and Buster's game hall and can cash in now for a PSP (which I already have) or an iPod nano 4GB. After seeing the iPod nano run linux and play video, I think I'm gonna have to go with the nano.
Is there any reason not to? Do they still scratchy like crazy or was that changed? I'm assuming if I use the iPod linux that it will no longer sync with iTunes, or can you "dual boot" them?
Thanks for the info... Peace.
Mike M @ Feb 7th 2006 9:59AM
Nice im liking this, these things are becoming for affordable for everyone.
x23 @ Feb 7th 2006 10:05AM
i almost bought a 1GB shuffle the other day... just to complement my 15GB 3G. to hold the newest 1GB worth of material... podcasts... and the like.
glad i didn't. this new nano is $129 edu and totally worth it. already ordered.
i would have bought a 30GB at the store the other day to replace my 15GB ... but they were out of stock. so now that i'm getting this nano i think i'll wait for the next big revision (or expansion of the line-up) on the big iPods before any more upgrading.
ivan @ Feb 7th 2006 10:05AM
i'll take a nano over the shuffle any day: linux for videos and stuff.

Education discount....sweet...
I just bought a Razr too. I'm going to duct tape them together and finally have the iPod phone I've always wanted.
(Thge rubber bands holding my iPod photo to my Treo 600 just weren't cutting it.)
Si @ Feb 7th 2006 10:22AM
No. 8 - The whole scratches thing is an exaggeration, and yes, iPod Linux is dual bootable.
Kaido @ Feb 7th 2006 10:22AM
I ordered mine this morning as well. $129 with student discount is fantastic! Now I can make up this Valentine's Day for losing my wife's Shuffle :)
Jay @ Feb 7th 2006 10:23AM
This thing replacing the Shuffle makes no sense. The Shuffle is perfect for going to the gym, etc., because of its tiny size, cheapness, and simplicity. It has no display, because one is not needed. Also, I would guess that when you have a Shuffle, many (like me) will also end up getting a Nano, as they are suited for completely different things.
I think this is a really stupid move. The only change they should make is to include an arm band with the Shuffle, and ditch that idiotic "lanyard" (no, it's a necklace). Or at least include the arm band in addition to that useless thing.
Joe @ Feb 7th 2006 10:25AM
Seems like the wrong direction to take the capacity... I was hoping for 6/8GB for $275 and 4GB for $200-225. No dice.
Tareq Ashry @ Feb 7th 2006 10:52AM
I wonder how much the 1GB iPod Nano will be in the UK?
tom @ Feb 7th 2006 11:01AM
Jay, can't you read? The 1GB Nano isn't replacing the shuffle. And if you really love the shuffle for using in the gym, why are you so annoyed that they have lowered the price?
Tim @ Feb 7th 2006 11:24AM
Forget Linux, Rockbox now works on the Nano!
Jim Wang @ Feb 7th 2006 11:28AM
Any hardware imporoved for this new ipod nano?
Jay @ Feb 7th 2006 11:37AM
Yes, I can read. The article above says phasing out old products "could be what they are doing with the Shuffle". I am saying this is a stupid idea. Hopefully they don't do this.
As for the Shuffle having a lower price, can't you read? I never said I was annoyed with that. Sure, of course it's great, though it doesn't really help me, since I already have mine.
What we need are Nanos with MORE capacity, as was stated above, in #15. This is what people will really get excited about, in my opinion.

Now if it just supported music subscriptions and didn't get scratched so easily.
ChillyWilly @ Feb 7th 2006 12:18PM
I'm with Joe on this one. I was expecting the following:
- new 8gb nano for $249
- the 4gb nano dropping to $199
- the 2gb nano being dropped
- a new 1gb nano for $129
- the 512mb shuffle going to $49
- the 1gb shuffle being dropped

What? 24 posts and no real iPodHater appearances yet? Where's the outrage over the lack of a built-in AM tuner? Or no OGG support? Or no support for WindowsMedia SuperDuper Platinum Edition With Calcium?
Come on guys, you're falling down on the job. No commission checks from Creative or Microsoft for you this month...
So here's a shout out to all the nay-sayers who cry that Apple's dominance will result in inflated pricing and lack of innovation.
The new cheaper Shuffle will be great for me for skiing and as a quick data-transfer device.
Jonathan Keim @ Feb 7th 2006 2:02PM
I'm with the 23# but except I thought it would be further out in the year. It could still happen you know
Baz @ Feb 7th 2006 3:33PM
I thought the next move would be nano 2gig-$149 4gig-$199 6/8gig-$249 and they would drop the shuffle.
No im thinkinng they will drop the shuffle and replace with nano 1gig-$99 2gig-$149 4gig-$199 and add a new model at $249. But im not sure what they could do other then 6gig and add a touch screen and PDA software the NewiPod (Newton-iPod. For the vidoe I would imaging the next version will have a bigger screen and a step up could ad Airport and a web browser and even a touchscreen organizer....Ok now im just being stupid.

I actually just purchased (w/ edu discount) the 1GB nano as a gift.
There will no doubt be some better iPod announcements in the coming months, but due to the drop in flash memory costs, Apple should have dropped the prices across the board, not just release a smaller capacity iPod nano.
Next feature to be added will be a voice-enabled search feature so you can call out songs while you're driving or whatever.
Corey @ Feb 7th 2006 4:19PM
I would like to get a 1GB Nano, but I think I'll hold out and just go for a 5G. I have all these damn episodes of "The Office" and it would be a shame if I couldnt take them with me.

Let's say I download a long MP3 file (radio statation podcast) to my Nano. Then in the middle of listening to it I turn the Nano off. Will it resume from that exact point after I turn it back on? Or will it resume from the beginning of the file?

It will resume from that exact point, and not only with podcasts, also with songs, slideshows... Even if you have it a few days turned off..
It will also resume any podcast you paused, even if you later go and play some songs or other podcasts and go back to that podcast...
da King @ Feb 7th 2006 9:00PM
cool about the lowered price on the shuffle. Should make nano less expensive and more resistant to scratch/breaking. Still waiting for the next new iPod to come out before buying a new one.
The next thing they should do is provide a cheap FM tuner/recorder to buy for the iPod...
Katie @ Feb 7th 2006 9:04PM
Well this is disapointing, I was hoping for a bigger nano. I bought a 4GB black nano with the replacement plan from best buy in october so i'm eagerly awaiting an upgrade.

you're disappointed by an unexpected price drop? speaking of commission cheques..

*** Check out the link and order one if you're getting a brand-new Nano. Apply the cover before you use it to maintain the Nano's delicate finish!****
Or, if you've recently bought a Nano and haven't scratched it too much, buy an InvisibleShield from the link I gave.
I got some small scratches on the metal back of my 4gb black Nano, but after I put the cover on it, no problems! Has the stock look [no "nanotubes", thanks Apple...the screen still scratches!]
Anyways, I've had this product on my Nano since about October and I had been using the Nano for ~2 weeks before applying it. The edges can come peeled back if you squeeze it into tight pockets, etc. So be careful applying it and stuff.
I'd highly recommend getting this!
hongkongtechkid @ Feb 8th 2006 1:47AM

Jeez... All you guys that were expecting an 6/8gb nano are freakin crazy. If apple had the money or resources or if it was even possible dont cha think they would have made that the 250 product?... where are you people getting this from?... nobody at all has reported a larger capacity nano. Apple is putting in 10 more gigs to the 300 ipod now so how do you expect them to make up the money for that? through a 1gb flash memory nano... brilliant move apple! i read somewhere that a 1gb of flash memory (for apple at least) was about 40 bux... so basically with the 1 gb they will be making a larger profit... there is no way in hell apple will release a larger capacity nano because ...
1. They would have to make another platter on it which would double its size (at least for an 8gb)
2. Nobody would pay 275 for a 6 gb player when they can get 24 more gigs plus video for 25 bux more
3. Flash memory is cheaper than at first but not that much cheaper so they would be loosing money because they would have to intro it inbetween the price range for the 4 gig and the 30 gig (at 40 bux a gig)just for the flash memory it would cost apple about 240 just for the memory.. no way in hell
Sorry guys but wait till the new ipods come next quarter... I know i am ;)
David @ Feb 8th 2006 11:17AM
I think I'm the only person in the world (besides that other poster) who really wants a built-in AM tuner (for sports radio, baby!).
Due to my uniqueness, I imagine this hope is but a pipedream.
Brandon @ Feb 8th 2006 9:40PM
O GREAT...lower the price on the 1gig shuffle just when i bought one.... fack!
tony @ Feb 12th 2006 10:48AM
Customers really should add the AppleCare co$t to the $149. The price point for the sleek Nano is now more affordable, but have any of you had to return your ipod because it no longer would update? Then scour all the ipod forums and apple tech sites only to finally give in and return for an exchange? I did and it was not a pleasant experience. Luckily some Apple Genius took pity on me and let me have the loaner replacement without charging the exorbitant $30 'shipping and handling' fee after the so called 1 year (until you read the fine print) She had other returns. Meanwhile my old Rio Cali 256mb with expandable SD was working just fine for my wife (who bought me the ipod) Caveat Emptor. Apple is a great brand marketing company.
