Motorola SLVR with iTunes - Coming soon from Cingular

One of the best parts of CES is that you get confirmation about cellphones that the wireless carriers don't want you to know they're going to be offering. Last year we caught a glimpse of a Cingular-branded Treo 650 (which dropped a few weeks later), this time around we got the hook up on a Motorola SLVR sporting a Cingular start-up screen, a screen which also happens to confirm that this thing will definitely be running iTunes when it hits the States sometime later this year.

Look at this keyboard. Come on, Motorola; you're going backward. The 2, 5, 8, and 0 keys are all inexplicably shifted down, out of line with their neighbors. Why should you have to look at the keyboard to dial the phone? That's the last thing we need: more morons not watching the road.

Wow that cellphone looks great. It looks way better then the old rokr.
o0adam0o @ Jan 4th 2006 8:36AM
Man, Cingular scoops up anything with buttons that you can make calls from! Wish Tmobile was like that....
Igor Jablokov @ Jan 4th 2006 8:43AM
Does it support EDGE and USB2 for iTunes transfers?
Dominic Cordisco @ Jan 4th 2006 8:44AM
Looks like a RAZR that doesn't fold in half.
Big whup.
Mark @ Jan 4th 2006 8:46AM
And that will be the next cell phone I buy. I allready have an ipod video, but that stays in my car.
Finished.Law.School @ Jan 4th 2006 8:46AM
I hope they offer it without itunes but I doubt they would do that...
Damo @ Jan 4th 2006 8:50AM
Any word on song limits?
Angry @ Jan 4th 2006 8:50AM
is that a midget hand?
pjmurphy @ Jan 4th 2006 8:52AM
I have this phone - it does have itunes on it but unfortunately it is still crippled to 100 songs (no matter how big the transflash). Mine is first run so they may be updated - also, no headphone jack. I had to get an 3.5mm adapter overseas. IM me for pix

THAT IS THE ONE
This is much better than the ROKR (New And Old)
The coolest Phone I've seen looks great
Crossblade @ Jan 4th 2006 8:59AM
This is not a ROKR. This is more a "RAZR" but in bar form-factor - the SLVR L7.

I say that it's still Motorola, so it still sucks. I say wait a couple months for Cingular's release of the Nokia 6682. I have an unlocked one from nokia.com, and it's by far the best phone on the market unless you want tiny design. They were sold a while ago, but thanks to cruddy programming of Cingular's firmware, they had so many issues it wasn't even funny. There are reports that it will be coming out this year, and rumors that it could be as soon as March. It may not have iTunes, but it has an MP3 player and changeable reduced-size mmc cards, so you don't have limited space as with the Motorolas.

Anyone know if this runs Moto's 'new and improved' interface? That's the biggest reason why I've stayed away from them for the last 3-4 years.
pjmurphy @ Jan 4th 2006 9:23AM
Same interface as the RAZR

I also have been rockin' one of these for the last month, and yes it is the candybar version of the V3. With its thin shape and the fact that its not as wide as the V3 it just disappears into your pocket without a strange bulge.
Patrick you did know you can get a USB headset right?
ventivent @ Jan 4th 2006 9:58AM
I played with a SLVR, RAZR and PEBL at a cellphone kiosk in Chinatown in Houston. I've had candybar phones in the past, including the T610 and the e398. The SLVR is definitely NOT a small phone, despite it's thin profile. It's pretty wide, and kinda chunky for a candybar phone. I'm more interested in the functionality of the ROKR 2. With SD card slot, 3.5mm jack, FM radio; this is the phone that Motorola designed to compete with Sony's new Walkman series.
JVijil @ Jan 4th 2006 10:10AM
Oh i'll take the SLVR. I have the Moto L6 and this looks much better. If they drop this they officially suck.
chez @ Jan 4th 2006 10:25AM
wasn't this supposed to be out last october? God I hate cell phone manufacturers and the carriers especially. I wish they would all be replaced by something better.
David @ Jan 4th 2006 10:47AM
I have this phone too. it is a candy bar style razr, that's it. My itunes is broken though, and I do not know where to get a flash to update it...any help?
Chris @ Jan 4th 2006 11:01AM
I was in Cingular yesterday looking for a replacment to my v600 and was going to buy the black razor, the rep told me to wait because the SLVR comes out at the end of January

#13 The Nokia 6682 is currently in stores. We've had them in my store for almost a month now. I personally used it for a while but the OS was too slow and phone was just too clunky. The camera lens feels real cheap and the picture quality wasn't as near as good as my S710 or my W600. In my opinion the SLVR is nothing special. Still only a 640x480 camera and still limited too 100 songs total no matter what the quality or the size of the memory card. This is basically just a candybar version of the RAZR which actually has been out of date for nearly a year. And as others have stated, I personally won't waste my money on a Motorola till they fix there GUI. For now and the foreseeable future my money is going to Sony Ericsson.
Cars-imir @ Jan 4th 2006 12:30PM
I like these new Motorola keyboards. Too bad, they've limited it to 100 songs.
diulei @ Jan 4th 2006 5:26PM
Motorola is an embarassment to American engineering.
Tripp @ Jan 4th 2006 6:18PM
Hey ventivent, where in Houston did you see this at? I would like to check it out. tripp at segura dot org

Angry -- I almost choked when I read that, then I couldn't stop laughing. That was the best.
Tilted @ Jan 6th 2006 9:13AM
"is that a midget hand?"
Damn... that's funny, Angry! Word up!
logan @ Jan 25th 2006 1:52PM
I just got back from Italy, where they already have the Euro version of this out. It performs wonderfully,
easier to carry than the RokrE1 (it's size is nice, thinner than a closed V3 in both depth and width.)
Downside, the camera is just as horrendously bad as the camera on the Razr...shoot something that's lit...and look out.
Overall though, good phone, solid call retention, mp3 player, Quad-band ability, and bluetooth w/ an added super-sleek body design.
Aside from the crap camera, fantastic.

this phone is pointless, just go buy a rocker that looks cooler than this phone, or if you want a black phone, buy a razor....this is such a stupid marketing idea..
