The Mobile Tsunami Detector
We here at Engadget pass no judgements on
those who might find cellphone based tsunami alerts to be a needed safety feature and not just some gimmicky cash-in on
public paranoia, but seriously guys. The Mobile Tsunami Detector 1.0 relies on real-time earthquake readings to create
tsunami warnings for all countries along the Indian Ocean and is a free download for Series 60 phones. So there. Now
don't come whining to us when you're last on the block to know.[Via MobileMag]

"90 mins to Phucket" priceless line with tsunami on its way or not!

unless that thing comes with plane tickets or a surfboard, i think whatever sound that thing makes will be the last one you hear.

Wow Mayor. You are critically stupid. 90 minutes is enough time to get away from the coast or at the very least get to higher ground. 90 minutes notice last year would have saved thousands of lives. Think before you post why don't ya.

This is the internet.
There is no thinking.

@John Doe
I think TheMayor wad referring to the fact that 90 minutes warning time would certainly be nice but so would be a trillion dollar mansion.
If they can manage 20 minutes advance warning with a sufficently low false positive rate, i would be very suprised.

90 minutes might be fine for the one guy who knows and doesn't tell anyone while he gets away, but to inform and move thousands of people is impossible in that timeframe... or even in days.

This reminds me of the execute chute, who remembers the executive chute?

If you know that in 1 hour, there will be an earth quake and you are at the center of it. What will you do ?

i just spent the last six weeks in indonesia treating tsunami survivors. i spent a bunch of time in aceh, the area hit hardest. this sounds like a great idea, now if only there was cell phone coverage in the area it might work...
