OlliOlli World, the delightfully offbeat skateboarding platformer, launched a few weeks ago on basically every gaming console you could ask for. We tried it on the Nintendo Switch to see how it holds up on the less-powerful console.

After launching last year on PC and Sony platforms, both OlliOlli 2 and Not a Hero are heading to the Xbox One in 2016, each in its own definitive edition. OlliOlli 2: XL Edition includes the complete sidescrolling skateboarding game plus the new FreeSkate Mode. Check out our 2015 live stream with the developers for a taste of OlliOlli 2's grinding goodness. If you're in the mood for something more violent -- and somehow more adorable at the same time -- Not a Hero: Super Snazzy Edition features the base game (an isometric shooter starring an anthropomorphized bunny) plus new, exclusive content called "Me, Myself and BunnyLord."
Jessica Conditt02.18.2016Nintendo asks you to pay what you want for indie games
Nintendo's been going through some serious growing pains on its path to the modern era of console gaming but with this latest step it's actually beating Microsoft and Sony to the punch for once. The Japanese gaming company is running a Humble Bundle. Not a Nintendo homegrown version of a Humble Bundle, but a real McCoy on Humble's website. Pretty crazy right? Especially considering these are all indies. Up for grabs are digital codes for games on the 3DS handheld and Wii U alike, including Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition for the latter and Whoah Dave! for the former.
Timothy J. Seppala05.26.2015JXE Streams: Roll7 explains the guns and bunnies in 'Not a Hero'
Just over a month ago, Roll7 stopped by JXE Streams to laugh at us as we repeatedly wiped out grinding rails in skateboarding game OlliOlli 2. Now the studio is coming back on the show to mock us for lacking an entirely different set of skills. We're just not that good at jumping through windows and shooting thugs under the orders of a maniacal bunny man from the future who happens to be running for mayor. Yes, that is really what Not a Hero is about and we'll be playing it with the game's creators starting at 3:30PM ET.
Anthony John Agnello05.14.2015JXE Streams: Grinding rails with 'OlliOlli 2' developer Roll7
One of the most commonly and inappropriately used words employed to describe video games is "visceral." As combinations of vowels and consonants go it's a humdinger, but it's impact disappears when you're talking about a game where a happy plumber jumps on turtles. Viscera is not affected. OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood, Roll7's aggressively stylish skateboarding game, is actually visceral. The first time you wipe out on a staircase and watch your wee skater violently obey the laws of gravity, you can feel it in your very own guts and it is brutal. The satisfaction of starting again and nailing that same grind? Hits you in the same place. Today we're hanging out with the creators of OlliOlli 2 while playing the game on PS4.

The debut trailer for OlliOlli 2: Welcome To Olliwood (sequel to the addictive skateboarding platformer OlliOlli) promises "bigger tricks, epic new locations" and a "silky new style and flow," alongside locations ranging from Aztec temples to carnivals populated by zombies. [Image: Roll7]
Earnest Cavalli01.29.2015OlliOlli2 ramps up for PS4, Vita release in 2015
High-flying skateboard stunt sim OlliOlli is getting a sequel on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, developer Roll7 announced today. OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood expands on the framework of its predecessor with split-route levels, an improved grinding system, and a local four-skater multiplayer mode, among other major additions. The sequel will also feature combo-linking manuals and reverts, putting it on an evolutionary path that matches early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater sequels. OlliOlli2 will premiere in 2015. [Image: Roll7]
Danny Cowan09.25.2014OlliOlli kicks, pushes, coasts to PS4 and PS3
OlliOlli, Roll7's endless runner-meets-skateboarding game, is now available on PS4 and PS3. The game originally launched in January for Vita, and was previously targeted for other PlayStation systems in July. While it missed the mark for Sony's platforms, it did reach Steam last month. The game is 10 percent off for its first week on PS4 and PS3, and 20 percent off for PlayStation Plus members. It is also Cross-Buy and Cross-Save compatible, so those that own the Vita version can freely download it on PS4 and PS3 starting today. Roll7 may have created OlliOlli, but BlitWorks provided the PS4 and PS3 ports for the game. The studio also brought roguelike Spelunky to Vita. Our review of the original Vita version of OlliOlli found the game a bit difficult, but that for every "ten failed attempts" at a trick, each success felt like we earned it. In June, Roll7 introduced a fix for a game-crashing bug in addition to leaderboards, which are included in the other PlayStation versions. [Image: Roll7]
Mike Suszek08.26.2014See the pretty pixels sprouting in Devolver's indie garden
Devolver Digital's indie garden at Gamescom features a lineup of games that the publisher has curated over a few years for mass-market consumption, including three that we're particularly excited about: Not a Hero, Titan Souls and The Talos Principle. Each one is wildly different, but they all carry a similar theme. Not to bring the mood down or anything, but that theme is death. Not a Hero stars a bearded dude with no special powers, but he does have a gun. The problem is, everyone else has a gun, too. It's a twist on the classic pixelated platformer in that the environments have depth, allowing players to sink behind outcroppings in the walls to hide from flying bullets. It's lighthearted, fast-paced action featuring a humanoid blue bunny gang lord. Not a Hero comes from OlliOlli studio Roll7, and it's due out on PC in early 2015, with PS4 and Vita versions in the summer. Titan Souls has been a favorite of ours since E3, when it was awarded one of the coveted Joystiq E3 Selection stickers. It's all about one – you have one arrow, one life and you fight one giant, punishing enemy at a time. The only thing more than one in this game is the number of times you'll die. Titan Souls is by Claw and it's due out on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 and Vita in Q1 2015. The Talos Principle is a slower burn than its companions, offering a serene, 3D puzzle experience similar to Portal or what we've seen of The Witness. Between the shape and light-manipulation puzzles, it approaches death, religion and other deeply introspective topics from a philosophical angle, offering a mix of narrative and riddle. The Talos Principle is in development at The Swapper studio, Croteam, for PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS and PS4.
Jessica Conditt08.14.2014Stick OlliOlli in your half-pipe and smoke it on Steam next week
2D skateboarder OlliOlli looks to make another great landing when it hits Steam on July 22. The Roll7 game debuted on Vita earlier this year to high critical acclaim, with our four-star review lauding its mix of demanding tricks and simple controls. It will be interesting to see how those controls translate to the Steam port, which is compatible with Windows PC, Mac and Linux, and priced $13 in the US and £10 in the UK.
Sinan Kubba07.15.2014Leaderboards, cross-buy skate toward OlliOlli in coming weeks
Developer roll7 has announced three major additions to its skateboarding, platforming hit OlliOlli, each of which should be arriving very soon. First up is a patch to fix a lingering crash bug. According to roll7, the patch has been submitted to Sony's quality assurance team, and if it passes their testing, the patch should be available by June 20. Next, roll7 unveils a second patch it also hopes to release by the end of June. This one adds support for online leaderboards to the game, making it that much easier to demonstrate to your friends that you're two-dimensional second coming of Tony Hawk. Finally, roll7 reveals that OlliOlli will receive cross-buy and cross-save functionality when it arrives on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this July. The Vita incarnation of OlliOlli debuted in January, but even those who purchased the game at launch will be granted the freedom to download its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 counterparts once they come available at no additional charge. Earnest Cavalli06.03.2014Joystiq Discussion: Are you playing on PS Vita?
"Honestly, Vita owners are the ****ing best," said Chris McQuinn, designer at Drinkbox Studios, in an April interview with GamesIndustry International. McQuinn's team has put their impressive talents to work multiple times on PS Vita, pumping out inspired games like Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee. Some might say, though, Drinkbox would have been better off bringing its vivid slapstick adventures to Steam or home consoles first rather than a handheld with such sluggish sales. McQuinn disagrees. There may not be many Vita owners out there compared to PC players or iPhone owners, but Vita owners are proven game players. "People rag on the Vita so much, and I think people who rag on the Vita don't understand, at least from a business perspective, the purchasing power of Vita owners. Vita owners are serious purchasers of games. It's an amazing system." He's not wrong. PS Vita's blend of inputs, both traditional button controls and multi-touch surfaces, has proven revelatory in myriad games, from Sony and Media Molecule's Tearaway to scrappier independent productions like Roll7's OlliOlli. Those are just two games in what's become one of modern gaming's most quietly impressive libraries. For the classically minded player, Vita's got HD remasters like Final Fantasy X HD as well as a treasure trove of PS1 and PSP games on tap. For the modernity obsessed, it hosts a who's who of independent gaming, from Hotline Miami to Luftrausers. That's not to mention its handful of big budget originals like the sublime Gravity Rush. For all its merits, though, Vita's rough reputation persists. Why? Why is there a perception that Vita doesn't have any games when it's flush with new games and classics alike? For those that have resisted its wiles, why haven't you picked one up and what would convince you to take the plunge? Take the poll and discuss in the comments. Are you playing on PS Vita? Anthony John Agnello05.28.2014OlliOlli eyes up JulyJuly for jumps onto PlayStation consoles, PC
Roll7 says the plan is to kickflip OlliOlli onto PS3, PS4, and Steam in mid-July, bringing the Vita 2D skateboarder to other platforms for the first time. Speaking to Den of Geek, Roll7 Director Simon Bennett said "We are looking at July 22nd, [which is] my birthday!" The ports aren't in development at Roll7, with Spelunky Vita porter BlitWorks grinding out the PS4 and PS3 versions, and Devolver Digital on board for the Steam transitions to PC, Mac and Linux. As for Roll7 it's busy with 2D (or 2-and-a-quarter D...) pixelated cover-based shooter Not a Hero. Expected in late 2014, the PC game stars a mayor-in-the-making from the future called BunnyLord who tasks players with cleaning up crime in election season by going on a murderous rampage. So it's not much like OlliOlli. As long as it's as good as OlliOlli, we'll take all the BunnyLords Roll7 can throw at us. We gave the Vita game four stars in our review, deeming it "easy to pick up, with enough depth to warrant getting back up on your board whenever you tumble down the stairs." [Image: Roll7]
