Stream PS Vue's cord-cutting service from your Android device
Sony's attempt at killing your pay-tv subscription is available on Android now -- just like the company promised. What's more, PlayStation Vue also has a few new features on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. On the former, the channel guide has a video window in the upper right now, so you can keep an eye on what you were watching as you scroll through other viewing options. It's essentially what cable and satellite guides have offered for years. If you're using your PS3 as a media machine, the addition of a quick navigation overlay, which offers a "last channel" option among other tweaks, should be welcome; it's also available on PS4.
Timothy J. Seppala06.30.2016Sony will pay out millions to spurned PS3 Linux users
A long-running lawsuit stemming from Sony's claim that its PlayStation 3 consoles would allow for third-party operating systems has finally come to a close. As Ars Technica reports, the class-action lawsuit could end up costing Sony millions of dollars for getting on the bad side of some Linux fans, and if you're one of those Linux fans, you could be in for a $55 check.

Timothy J. Seppala06.12.2016'Destiny' Rise of Iron expansion hits PS4, Xbox One in September
Destiny's next expansion, Rise of Iron, hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 20th complete with a new raid, strike, weapons, gear, missions and competitive multiplayer mode. This is the first Destiny expansion to hit current-generation consoles only -- there's no word on Xbox 360 or PS3 releases. Rise of Iron brings back the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher, a weapon that was over-powered in the game's early days but fell off once Destiny entered Year Two. For those who pre-order the new content, the Gjallarhorn comes in an "Iron Black" color, fitting the whole ferrous theme. Rise of Iron also introduces a new social space called The Plaguelands Zone. The expansion costs $30 and requires players own the Destiny base game plus The Taken King.
Jessica Conditt06.09.2016'Skylanders Imaginators' lets you create your own heroes
Just because Disney is calling it quits on Infinity doesn't mean that the era of collectible-driven video games is over. Activision has unveiled Skylanders Imaginators, and its centerpiece is the ability to create your own hero using a wide array of body parts and gear. At last, you're no longer limited to whatever the developers can dream up. You won't get a real-world figurine that matches your exact character, unfortunately, but there will be "Creation Crystals" you can buy to bring your champion to other consoles.
Jon Fingas06.01.2016'Persona 5' gets a new trailer and release date in Japan
Persona, one of the most stylish and contemporary JRPG franchises, is almost ready to make its debut on the PlayStation 4. Developer Atlus held an event today in Japan for the next instalment, Persona 5, dropping a new trailer and plenty of tantalizing gameplay details. More important, however, is the game's new release date: September 15th, 2016. For now that's strictly a Japan date -- there's no word on when a localized version will launch on the PS3 and PS4 in the West. Still, it's a promising development given the game has been delayed multiple times.
Nick Summers05.05.2016Long-delayed 'Mighty No. 9' arrives June 21st
No, your eyes aren't deceiving you -- after more than a few delays, Comcept has announced that Mighty No. 9 is finished. Keiji Inafune's spiritual sequel to Mega Man will arrive in Asia and North America on June 21st, and the rest of the world on June 24th. The initial release is limited to console and computer players (albeit on virtually every platform), but versions for both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are due "at a later point." Just be sure to think carefully about your choice of media format: while downloads are more convenient, a retail copy includes the Ray add-on.
Jon Fingas05.02.2016PlayStation Network is adding two-factor sign-ins
It's about to get much harder for someone to compromise your PlayStation Network account. Sony has confirmed that it's working on two-factor authentication for PSN, preventing intruders from getting into your games (or worse, going on a spending spree) simply because they have your password. It's unclear just what that second identifying factor will be, but the odds are that you'll get an SMS-based code to type in the first time you sign into a device or website.
Jon Fingas04.20.2016'Destiny' trailer shows what's new in the big April update
Bungie has seemingly been teasing Destiny: The Taken King's April update for ages, but it's finally (almost) here -- and the studio has seen fit to release one last trailer that explains what all the fuss is about. The clip gives you a whirlwind tour of virtually everything that's new, including new quests, strikes and story missions, the increased Light level and new gear ranging from chroma trim (basically, shiny lighting) to Taken-themed armor.
Jon Fingas04.11.2016'Destiny' spring update arrives on April 12th
Bungie hasn't been shy about teasing Destiny updates in between The Taken King and its sequel, but what are those going to look like, exactly, and when is it arriving? The studio isn't spilling all the beans just yet, but it's now offering a few clues. As part of a multi-post preview, Bungie has revealed that Destiny's first big post-TTK update (aka version 2.2) will launch on April 12th with at least a few sweet offerings. There's a new quest that revolves around the mysterious Blighted Chalice strike, as well as additional player-versus-environment challenges. Also, you can anticipate a smattering of new and updated gear, Crucible updates and an increased maximum Light level with rewards to match.
Jon Fingas03.20.2016Platinum is making a 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' game
It's been a bit since we had a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game and an even longer time since we had a good one. But that could soon change when Platinum Games unleashes TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan this summer on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Yeah, that's right: the rumors that swirled around last month are true. Over on the PlayStation Blog, Platinum's Robert Cooper says that if you've played any of the studio's previous action games that you shouldn't have a lot of trouble getting comfortable in the solo and co-op campaign here.
Timothy J. Seppala01.26.2016'Journey Live' blends video games with the symphony stage
Journey is going on tour. No, not the band -- the innovative PlayStation 3 game, Journey, and Chicago's Fifth House Ensemble are embarking on a tour that blends gaming with live, reactive music. Journey Live is an interactive event where selected people will play the game and the ensemble will respond to their actions on-stage. Grammy-nominated Journey composer Austin Wintory and fellow musician Patrick O'Malley drew up a special, interactive version of the game's score that allows the ensemble to mirror a live playthrough.
Jessica Conditt01.21.2016Play 'Amplitude' on PS4 in the dark with giant speakers
Amplitude is a quiet kind of phenomenon. Not that the game itself is silent -- depending on how high you crank your speakers, it can be soul-pounding and skin-tingling -- but there's a surprisingly deep pool of reverence for this music-driven, space-racing series. Against all odds, the PlayStation 4 version that launched this week raised $844,000 from 14,000 backers on Kickstarter in mid-2014, its campaign riding the nostalgic, neon waves of its 2002 PS2 predecessor. Those aren't the only waves that players might ride while playing Amplitude, creative lead Ryan Lesser told Engadget. The game is dark and bright at the same time, shooting you down winding, floating platforms littered with orbs that create a soundtrack as you shoot them. In the right environment, the latest version of Amplitude sparks an intimate connection with music and movement. With this experience in mind, we asked Lesser to divulge the best way to play Amplitude, whether with friends, alone, while drinking alcohol or maybe even consuming other mind-altering substances. He laughed before answering. "I sort of hope that the game has the same effect on people that some mind-altering substances do," he said. "Personally, I am a big fan of solo play on a gigantic TV (with no AV lag), huge speakers and in total darkness."
Jessica Conditt01.08.2016PlayStation Now just got 40-plus new PS3 games
Sony announced the addition of more than 40 PS3 games to its Now service, bringing the total number of available PS3 games to 300, 100 of which are PS3 exclusives. Additionally, Sony's offering a pretty steep discount on the Now service itself for the holidays -- $100 for a full year's subscription. That's more than half off what they normally charge. The discount offer runs through Monday, January 11th. [Image Credit: Getty]
Andrew Tarantola01.05.2016GoPro's streaming channel finally lands on PlayStation
GoPro's been feeding the other gaming platform its curated video channel for over half a year. Now, it's ready "for the players." The console app will allow PS3 and PS4 owners to stream all the sane GoPro content, as well as shop for the company's products, directly from their gaming systems. The channel will launch with at least one exclusive video, though, The 66th Parallel – Discovering Iceland with Ben Brown. Though, it will only be an exclusive until December 29th, at which time it will disseminate to GoPro's other platforms including Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, and Roku.[Image Credit: Getty]
Andrew Tarantola12.22.2015Last-gen systems aren't getting new 'Call of Duty' maps
If you're still feeling salty over Activision nixing Call of Duty: Black Ops III's campaign mode on last-gen systems the next bit of news won't do much to make the situation any better. In an announcement about the latest set of downloadable content, the "Awakening" pack which includes a quartet of adversarial multiplayer maps and the first episode of a new "zombies" tale, the company writes that the DLC will launch next February 2nd on PlayStation 4 first with "other next-gen platforms to follow."
Timothy J. Seppala12.22.2015Plex streaming app now free on Xbox and PlayStation
Plex, the app that helps a large number of folks organize and stream their media collections, is now available for free on Xbox and Playstation consoles. Up until now, it was in the preview stages and required a $5 per month or $40 per year Plex Pass. Users without the pass will now get the basic version of the app on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4 and PS3. With a pass, you'll get extra features like premium music libraries, mobile sync and preview releases like the aforementioned console apps.
Steve Dent12.18.2015PlayStation Now offers 12 months of game streaming for $100
For a game streaming service to succeed, it needs three crucial components: a decent library, competitive pricing and reliable, silky-smooth performance. PlayStation Now struggles on all three fronts, but slowly those shortcomings are being rectified. For instance, Sony is offering a better value subscription plan -- now, you can pay $99.99 for 12 months of access, which works out at just over $8 per month. Compared with the company's existing one-month ($19.99, or $240 per year) and three-month ($44.99, or $180 per year) plans, it's a steal.
Nick Summers12.07.2015Unofficial app makes PlayStation 4 to PC streaming a reality
Sony's had its Remote Play tech in one form or another since the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, but it didn't truly take off until its implementation on PlayStation 4 and the PS Vita handheld. But that's kind of wasted when nobody is buying the Vita and it's getting zero love from its parent company. Remote Play PC is exactly what its name implies: an application that tricks the PS4 into thinking a PC is a Remote Play device. Microsoft changed the game (sorry) with the ability for the Xbox One to stream its games to Windows 10-based hardware and until Sony catches up we're just going to have to settle for an unofficial app that costs money to perform the task.
Timothy J. Seppala11.24.2015'Beyond: Two Souls' hits PS4 next week
When it comes to story-driven gameplay, few developers are quite as ambitious as Quantic Dream. We already knew that its PS3 titles, Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, were coming to PS4, and now we've got some release dates. Beyond is coming out digitally next week: November 24th in the US ($29.99) and November 26th in Europe (€29.99/£24.99). If you buy the game that way, you'll also get access to a discounted version of Heavy Rain -- it's due on March 1st in the US, but it's not clear exactly when it'll be available digitally elsewhere. For Europe, Quantic Dream has confirmed a physical bundle called, unsurprisingly, The Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls Collection. That'll arrive on March 4th in the UK and March 2nd for the rest of Europe. There's no word on pricing, and we suspect that's roughly when Heavy Rain will launch digitally across the continent.
