Kris Holt08.21.2019Uber will take cash for rides in one Indian city
Part of the point of Uber is paying for a car ride without reaching for your wallet, but the company is willing to make exceptions if it means getting your business. As of May 12th, you can get a lift in Hyderabad, India using old-fashioned cash -- important in a country where online credit card payments are relatively rare. It's just an "experiment" at the moment, but the ridesharing outfit tells the Financial Times that it's considering expanding the option to other developing areas if it takes off. You probably won't be paying for American trips with hard currency, then. Still, the extra choice could mean a lot if the rupees in your pocket are all you have to get to the airport on time. Google is bringing voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation to Android smartphone users in India. While the functionality's been available since January if you've rooted your device, the official version lands today with a localized "Indian English" voice option. At the same time, it's adding live traffic information for major roads in big cities like Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad -- with both arriving today on handsets running Gingerbread and up. At the same time, it's giving Google Map Maker and Biking Directions to users in New Zealand -- and college students at over 150 universities worldwide will now be able to find themselves thanks to Street View maps on campus. Of course, that does mean you can no longer use Google as an excuse as to why you missed Phys. Ed. 202 next semester. [Thanks, Devanshu]

If 7,000 dominoes fall in a forest of cheering Microsoft employees, do they make enough noise for us to care? We don't usually tell Microsoft how to run its promotions, but a domino installation that takes a full three minutes to topple is pretty much an open invitation for "slow boot-up" jokes, and a climactic finale that revolves around a hot air balloon version of your logo crashing against a glass ceiling might also create the wrong impression. Ah well, these guys are engineers and not choreographers, after all -- you can see the fruit of their labor after the break. [Thanks, Colin]
