HQ Trivia makes a surprise return
HQ Trivia -- the once-popular mobile game that turned your random knowledge into a few bucks -- abruptly shut down earlier this year after an investment deal fell through. As such, players that still had the app on their phones were probably surprised to receive a push notification last night alerting them to the start of a new broadcast. HQ Trivia, it seems, is back. For now, at least, as the hows and whys are unclear -- although the game's founder did say last month he was searching for new investment. All we know, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, is that an anonymous investor has stumped up the cash to get the game, dubbed "Chapter Two" back on its feet. Games will be held every day at 9pm ET, apparently, and each game this week will include a donation towards coronavirus-related efforts -- a nice gesture that suggests there might be big money behind the new push. Who knows how long it'll be around for, but it's certainly something to do while you're stuck indoors.

HQ Trivia game abruptly shuts down after 14 'seasons'
HQ Trivia, which was once a popular mobile game where you can earn a few dollars, is no more. CNN has obtained an internal memo from CEO and co-founder Rus Yusupov, terminating 25 full-time employees and all contractors because the company has to cease operations immediately. Apparently, HQ Trivia hired a banker to find additional investors and received an offer to be acquired by an "established business." For "reasons [the company] is still investigating," though, the acquisition fell through. And since its current investors are no longer willing to fund the company, it has to shut down.

Facebook axes its Confetti trivia game in the US and UK
Facebook has continued to adjust the programming offered through its Watch platform by cutting shows that don't bring in enough viewers. Now, one year after it launched, the company has called time on its Confetti trivia game show. The interactive style of the show followed in the footsteps of HQ Trivia, but the popularity of the format has waned since its peak in 2018.

'Game of Thrones' and Amazon's 'Mrs. Maisel' lead Emmy nominations
The Television Academy has revealed this year's Emmy nominations and to absolutely no one's surprise, Game of Thrones scooped up the most nods with 32, including Outstanding Drama Series and 10 nominees across various acting categories. The show with the second-highest tally of nominations is Amazon Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20. It won several awards last year, including the top Outstanding Comedy Series prize. It's nominated again in that category.

HQ Trivia's fourth season starts at 9 PM ET
About a year and a half after it first popped up on our mobile screens, HQ Trivia is launching "season four" tonight at 9 PM ET with several gameplay tweaks and a refreshed cast of hosts. The trivia game streams live to player's phones and offers real cash prizes, however now you don't have to get all the way to the end to cash in. Instead players can choose to bank a smaller amount like $50 -- or keep playing for the big prize.

Google will let you play simple games on smart displays
Starting today, developers will be able to create games for Google's smart displays. Google is opening up access to a Google Assistant-based framework called Interactive Canvas, which will allow them to build full-screen apps (or Actions) on smart displays that bring together touchscreen inputs, voice and visuals. For the time being, games are the only type of Actions they can create for smart displays using Canvas, with more categories coming soon.

HQ Trivia host Scott Rogowsky leaves for a sports show
HQ Trivia has been broadcasting its live game show to mobile devices for about a year and a half now, and usually the events were hosted by "quiz daddy" Scott Rogowsky. He hasn't been on the air for the last few weeks, and as TMZ first reported today, that's because he's parted ways with HQ after taking a new job hosting a baseball show on sports streaming network DAZN. Apparently Rogowsky wanted to continue hosting HQ part-time, however the company declined to keep him on for weekend games. Former guest host Matt Richards is now the regular primetime host, and in a series of tweets Rogowsky called ChangeUp "a dream opportunity that I simply couldn't pass up." A statement provided to TechCrunch said: "We continue to build an incredible company at HQ Trivia, from drawing hundreds of thousands of players to the platform daily, to increasing the size of the prize, to attracting strong talent. We've come a long way since Scott Rogowsky's first trivia game and we're grateful for everything he's done for the platform...e're just getting started at HQ Trivia, and as he makes his next move, wanted to take a minute to thank him for being part of our journey."
