  • A large Donkey Kong arcade cabinet is shown with a black human figure standing at a smaller control panel in front of it.

Museum creates giant ‘Donkey Kong’ cabinet with a little help from Nintendo

The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York unveiled an absolutely massive 'Donkey Kong' arcade cabinet, with a total height of nearly 20 feet. The museum indicated in a tweet that Nintendo actually helped out with making the cabinet larger, which makes sense as the company is protective of its IPs, and 'Donkey Kong' was the first appearance of Mario.

  • Did You Know Gaming takes another swing at Donkey Kong

This close to Halloween you'd expect the trivia buffs at Did You Know Gaming to tell us that Donkey Kong wears a red tie to hide the spattered blood of his enemies, but instead this clip explores the origins of Diddy Kong and features little-known tidbits on the canceled Donkey Kong Racing. • Super Smash Bros. Amiibo figures are part trophy, part protégé

Nintendo is getting into the figurine game with a lineup called "amiibo" (disregard for capitalization included). Set to cooperate with several different games, most prominently this holiday's Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., the Amiibo statues capture the company's fanciful characters in a cute, tangible form. "Capturing" might be too strong a word, though, because it implies more fiction than there really is.

  • On like Donkey Kong; new champion crowned with record score

In 2011, surgeon Hank Chien broke the then-record score for Donkey Kong, and became - for the second time - the world champion of the classic game. But all kings of Kong eventually fall from the Empire State Building their throne, and so it was with Chien, whose title has now passed to a man named Robbie Lakeman. The Donkey Kong Blog, a website dedicated to following the Donkey Kong competitive scene, reports Lakeman's score as 1,141,800 - a relatively narrow victory over Chien's score of 1,138,600. Interestingly, while Lakeman typically streamed his attempts at beating the record, the run that resulted in his new title was instead uploaded after the fact. However, you can watch the whole four-hour ordeal by checking out the video after the break.

  • Link steps up to bat in new Super Smash Bros. screenshots

In the latest pictorial tease from Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai, we're introduced to the new, black home-run bat. According to Sakurai, this new bat is "so powerful that your eyes might bug out," a sentiment that would seem hyperbolic if it wasn't for Donkey Kong amply demonstrating exactly that kind of ocular ejection. While this image doesn't tell us much about the latest incarnation of the home-run bat, it's good to see the classic weapon return. No matter which Smash Bros. entry you pick up, you can always depend on the bat to be an intuitive weapon that doles out huge amounts of punishment and has a tendency to launch characters into the stratosphere. Past the break you'll find a second image which shows just that. Now that the bat has been confirmed the question becomes whether or not the upcoming Wii U and 3DS Super Smash Bros. sequels will feature the fan-favorite Home-run Contest. Unless Sakurai generously reveals the game mode in an upcoming screenshot dump, we may not see an answer until those games debut later this year. [Image: Nintendo]

  • Funky Kong returns in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Following a five-year absence from gaming, Donkey Kong's surfer bro ally Funky Kong will return in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - though it's unclear what exactly he'll be doing. To date, four cast members have been revealed to be playable in Tropical Freeze: Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and, as Nintendo revealed at the recent VGX awards show, Cranky Kong. Funky Kong's appearance however, was unceremoniously dumped on Twitter. "Get stoked! Funky Kong makes a radical return in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, coming to #WiiU on 2/21," it reads, making no mention of Funky's role. Whether Funky is playable, or again appears as the owner of the game's item shop, Tropical Freeze still marks his first appearance in a game since 2008's Mario Super Sluggers.

  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze trailer is cranky, probably needs a nap

Nintendo showed off a new trailer for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze during its Nintendo Direct presentation today. The video briefly spotlights the Wii U game's fourth playable character, Cranky Kong, who was first announced for the game during the VGX awards earlier this month. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was previously scheduled to launch this month, but was delayed to February 21 back in October. Our time with the game at E3 this year playing cooperative multiplayer was largely positive, and at some points "seemed really difficult, even by Donkey Kong standards."

  • Donkey Kong world champion defends title for second year running

Jeff Willms continues his reign as the barrel-hopping, hammer-wielding champion of Nintendo's 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong after coming in first place at the recently concluded Kong Off 3 competition in Denver, Colorado. Willms finished first with a score of 1,096,200, edging out his closest competitor by more than 20,000 points. This year marks the second Kong Off win for Willms, who took home the top prize in last year's competition. Willms currently holds the fourth-highest Donkey Kong score on record, while fellow Kong Off competitor Dr. Hank Chien boasts the highest score ever achieved, 1,138,600. Chien took third place in Kong Off 3 with a score of 1,056,900, losing out to runner-up Ross Benziger. Noted Donkey Kong enthusiasts Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe also competed in the event, continuing a rivalry famously dramatized in the 2007 documentary film The King of Kong. Wiebe ranked in at fifth place by scoring 1,048,800, while Mitchell lagged far behind at 22nd place with a score of 598,800.

  • 3DS Virtual Console queues up Donkey Kong, Wario Land 3, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl

Nintendo has announced a batch of new old games are coming to the 3DS Virtual Console. First is the NES port of Donkey Kong, due on August 15, followed by the NES port of Tecmo Bowl sometime next month. Super Mario Bros. 3 is also on its way later this year, to both the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Finally, Nintendo assures lauded Game Boy Color platformer Wario Land 3 is "coming soon" to the 3DS. Both the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles have been busy lately: Capcom just recently completed the Mega Man hexalogy on the 3DS, with more of the blue bomber arriving in the coming months. And, late last month on the Wii U Virtual Console, Nintendo finally re-released Earthbound.
