Georgina Torbet12.31.2019Google Calendar will guess your working hours and warn colleagues
Google Calendar's Working Hours feature has been around for a while, letting you inform others when you'll be around for meetings and when you're unavailable. Previously, you'll have had to activate it through the app's settings, but now it'll be enabled by default, displaying an estimate of your work day availability based on previous appointments (which you can tweak if they're not quite right).

Rachel England04.09.2019Helm's personal email server helps you avoid data breaches
Are you uncomfortable with the thought that some of your sensitive data is sitting on a remote server that represents a big, juicy target for hackers? Helm thinks it has a solution: put that data inside your home. It's launching a namesake personal server that handles email, calendars and contacts without the setup headaches of conventional methods. You just have to pick a domain name (if you don't already have one) and walk through a setup process that should only take a few minutes -- after that, you have 120GB of expandable data space under your control.
Jon Fingas10.17.2018Outlook's simplified redesign arrives in public preview
Microsoft teased significant upgrades to Outlook as part of its big Office interface update, and they're finally here... in a manner of speaking. Outlook users on the web and Windows can start trying a public preview of a new experience that's simultaneously less overwhelming and more powerful. Most notably, you can use a simplified ribbon that includes the essentials while staying out of your way. You can expand it at any time if you need more, but you don't need that clutter if you're just handling common tasks.
Jon Fingas09.04.2018Everyone will soon have to use the Google Calendar redesign
If you've been avoiding the visual refresh Google recently gave to the web version of Calendar, your time is almost at an end. Starting January 8th, users of G Suite and Google Domains will be automatically switched to the new design. Anyone who opted out manually won't be forced to use the new Calendar until February 5th, but all users will get the upgrade on February 28th.
Rob LeFebvre01.04.2018Newton's simple-is-better email app gets a calendar counterpart
The Newton app is a quality (if pricey) email client that offers simplicity on the surface and intelligence underneath, but it has at least one glaring flaw: that design philosophy doesn't carry over when you need to check your schedule. The Android app had a calendar feature, but it was bolted on. You might not have to make that trade-off for much longer. The developer has introduced a separate Newton Calendar app for iOS, and it continues that less-is-more strategy while adding some thoughtful touches. Most notably, you don't have to wade through the usual forms to add an event -- you tap the date, type in the time and title and you're set.
Jon Fingas11.27.2017Google Calendar for web gets a much-needed makeover
Google Calendar on the web has finally caught up to its sleeker, more visually appealing sibling for mobile. The big G has given the G Suite member a much-needed visual refresh, updating its color palette to look more like the mobile app's and even giving it an interface that automatically adjusts itself to look its best no matter what your screen size is. You can now switch views using a drop-down menu on the top right of the screen and, if you're on Day View mode, it can display several calendars side-by-side.
