    Uber is testing rooftop ads on its ridesharing fleet

    Uber is getting into the advertising business. The company has reached a partnership with the ad-tech company Adomni to bring roof-top ads to its fleet, Adweek reports. Drivers in Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix will soon be able to put ad displays on their vehicles, and Uber plans to expand the option to more cities.

    KFC is testing Beyond Meat 'chicken' in an Atlanta restaurant

    Plant-based meat substitutes may soon be an option for fast food chicken. CNBC reports that KFC will start testing Beyond Fried Chicken at an Atlanta restaurant on August 27th. Yes, you could grab a bucket of chicken without feeling quite so guilty -- or greasy, if Beyond Meat's earlier work is any indication. Whether or not availability grows will depend on feedback, but other restaurant chains (such as Del Taco) have seen upticks in demand since adding meat substitutes.

    Lyft's frugal Shared Saver option is now available to many more people. The ridesharing service ahs trotted out its most affordable option to six more large US cities, including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle. The principle remains the same: if you're comfortable with both sharing a ride and walking short distances, you can save a bit of cash versus demanding exact pick-ups and drop-offs.

    LG's V50 ThinQ 5G is up for pre-order tomorrow from Sprint

    Starting tomorrow, customers in select cities can preorder Sprint's first two 5G devices -- the LG V50 ThinQ 5G and HTC 5G Hub. They'll be available in Sprint's first four expected 5G markets -- Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Kansas City -- by May 31st. And in the next few weeks, they'll hit Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, DC. Sprint's announcement suggests its on track with its goal to launch 5G in those cities this spring.

    At Samsung's Unpacked event Wednesday, it emerged Verizon is getting a short-term exclusive on Samsung's first 5G phone, the Galaxy S10 5G. To make sure people can use the handset and other 5G phones as intended, the provider plans to turn on its 5G mobile network in 30 US cities this year.

    Delta Air Lines is launching what it calls the first "biometric terminal" in the US. The airline will use facial recognition at check-in, security and boarding inside the international terminal at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson -- similar to systems already in place in Dubai and Australia, but more comprehensive than the biometric checks already in use at other airports around the US.

    When The Overwatch League's 2019 season starts, you'll see two new teams compete for the chance to be crowned as the tournament's second champion. Blizzard has officially welcomed the cities of Atlanta, Georgia and Guangzhou, China to the league, expanding its reach and bringing it to more fans across the globe. They've yet to reveal their team names, rosters and emblems, but Blizzard has revealed the companies paying for their entry. Communications and automotive services conglomerate Cox Enterprises owns the Atlanta team, while the Nenking Group, which also owns the Guangzhou Long Lions basketball team, is behind the Guangzhou team.

    A single ransomware creator made almost $6 million

    The SamSam ransomware, which throttled the city government of Atlanta earlier this year, netted its creators more than $5.9 million in ransom payments, according to a comprehensive report by UK cybersecurity firm Sophos. The report, which details SamSam's activity since its launch in 2015, also reveals that a lone black hat hacker could've raked in the entire haul by themselves.

    Atlanta ransomware attack may cost another $9.5 million to fix

    The effects of the "SamSam" ransomware attack against Atlanta's government were much worse than it seemed at first glance. To start, city Information Management head Daphney Rackley revealed at a meeting that more than a third of Atlanta's 424 necessary programs were knocked offline or partly disabled, and close to 30 percent of those affected apps were "mission critical" -- that is, vital elements like the court system and police. The government initially reckoned that essential programs were safe.

  • DoorDash will deliver groceries from Walmart in Atlanta

    Walmart's latest tech trick is delivering groceries via DoorDash. Except instead of this being a Walmart offering, it's actually being led by DoorDash according to TechCrunch. End users shouldn't notice a difference, however. Logging on to the Walmart website, you can place an order, choose delivery and then your bread and produce will show up at your door. And only then will you discover it was DoorDash, not the store itself making the delivery. The pilot program is live in Atlanta currently, with no word on if or when there will be an expansion.
