Rachel England01.07.2020Get ready for a 'Cyanide & Happiness' battle royale game
Things are already pretty dark in the Cyanide & Happiness universe, but throw a post-rapture apocalypse into the mix and you've got straight-up carnage. That's the backdrop of Rapture Rejects, a top down isometric last-man-standing game set in the (crumbling) world of everyone's favourite bleak comic strip. It's essentially a mash-up of Battle Royale and Worms, with no boring military stuff and plenty of bizarre weapons, plus Cyanide & Happiness' imitable brand of OTT animated violence. And also Satan. You can sign up for alpha, which is happening this summer, now.
Rachel England06.12.2018Mealworms convert Styrofoam waste into usable soil
Researchers have found a scourge for the 33 million tons of plastic dumped each year in the US: mealworms. A team from Stanford and China's Beihang University found that the beetle larvae stay perfectly healthy eating just Styrofoam, which is normally considered non-biodegradable. Better still, the worms convert the plastic to CO2 and waste that's safe to use as soil for crops. The scientists were as surprised by the discovery as you might be. "There's a possibility of really important research coming out of bizarre places," said Stanford professor Craig Criddle. "This is a shock."

Holy hell, yes? Meanwhile, some scientists figured out how to use mind control on worms in a lab with an ultrasonic pulse that gets the slimy suckers to change course. And a group of friends gathered in the desert in Nevada to build a scaled seven mile solar system. Bummer alert: They left off Pluto.
Kerry Davis09.18.2015Keflings dev's Nutjitsu coming to Xbox One, says Microsoft exec
Stealthy puzzler Nutjitsu is in the opening batch of ID@Xbox games, according to Microsoft corporate VP Phil Spencer. Developed by A Kingdom for Keflings studio Ninjabee, Nutjitsu is a top-down affair in which you guide an adorable ninja squirrel through mazes guarded by equally cute samurai foxes. Ninjabee released it on Windows Phone 8 last year, and if Spencer's tweet is accurate, it's sneaking onto Xbox One shortly. Spencer also name-dropped a Worms game as one of the "first shipping" through the self-publishing ID@Xbox program. Worms dev Team 17 and Ninjabee are both confirmed as participating ID@Xbox developers, and Ninjabee's already said it's bringing Nutjitsu to a new platform for the studio, so the nuts stack up on this one. We've reached out to Team 17 for more details on the Worms game. Last we heard, ID@Xbox's debut was set for Q1 2014, and closer to March 2014 according to program director Chris Charla. Update: Team 17 announced its ID@Xbox game as Worms Battlegrounds, and it's also coming to PlayStation 4. Its due on both systems sometime this year. [Image: Ninjabee]

Jessica Conditt11.01.2013Worms Revolution Extreme bombards PS Vita on October 8
Come October 8, Team 17's heavily-armed annelids will be making the leap to Sony's Vita handheld in Worms Revolution Extreme. Like its predecessors, Worms Revolution Extreme focuses on teams of worms attempting to kill each other in ludicrously over the top, turn-based fashion. The new Vita game offers players 72 single player stages which the PlayStation.blog describes as a "mixture of missions and puzzles." Online multiplayer is also included for one to four players, and includes Deathmatch, Classic and Forts game modes, alongside all the options menus necessary to create your own, customized multiplayer game type. New to the series is the Treasure Mode which allows players to unlock special items by trading data between Worms Revolution Extreme and the PlayStation 3's Worms Revolution. Game saves will also carry across these two versions, though that utility only goes so far given that the PlayStation 3 game has far less singleplayer content than its handheld counterpart. When Worms Revolution Extreme makes its Vita debut on October 8 it will feature a $15 price tag, and be available for download from the PlayStation Network Store.
Earnest Cavalli09.26.2013Worms 3 coming to iOS as a mobile exclusive
Fans of classic PC gaming rejoice! It's time to lock, load, and blow up some Worms on your iPhone. Developers Team 17 have announced Worms 3 exclusively for iOS in Q3 of this year. Worms 2 was officially released in 1997, and while there have been add-ons and odd experiments like Worms 3D, this is the first new old-school Worms game in a long time. Team 17 is the same developer behind the upcoming new PC Worms title Worms Clan Wars. Worms 3 will feature turn-based, asynchronous multiplayer online play, meaning you don't have to commit to playing a full game all at once online. There will also be traditional pass-and-play local multiplayer for up to four players. The game also introduces a class system for your Worm warriors including Soldier, Scout, Scientist and Heavy troopers. Considering this is the game that gave us exploding sheep as a tactical weapon, we can't wait to see what special tools each class brings with it. Gamers who want to play by themselves will get 27 single player missions across four themes; Beach, Spooky, Farmyard and Sewer. Of course it wouldn't be Worms if there wasn't an arsenal of insane weapons to play with, including new additions like Nora's Virus, a Black Hole Grenade and the return of the Homing Pigeon. Team 17 is also adding a new Card mode to the game. When turned on the system allows players to use strategic cards to enhance there moves at the start and end of the turn. You can build your deck from 41 cards that can be purchased with in-game rewards and, presumably though not officially announced, with in-game purchases. The game will also support AirPlay, meaning you can link it up to your Apple TV and blow Worms to kingdom come on the big screen in your living room. Worms 3 is still a few months out, but based on what's available now, this is a title to look out for.
John-Michael Bond07.11.2013Worms: Clan Wars is PC exclusive, coming from Team17
Fans of invertebrate warfare will be happy to hear a new Worms game, Worms Clan Wars, has been announced. Developer Team17 will unveil the new entry in the iconic series at this weekend's UK PC and indie games conference, Rezzed. Can't get to Brighton? Perhaps you don't even know where Brighton is? David Hinkle06.20.2013Worms wriggling to PS Vita in 2013
A PS Vita version of Worms is coming this year. "One big Worms game we can mention is a game for the PS Vita that we are working closely with Sony on, this will be the ultimate handheld console version releasing later this year," Managing Director at Team17 Debbie Bestwick says. It's a brief aside during a lengthy piece at Red Bull about how the company has managed to stay profitable all these years, mostly on the backs of its invertebrate mascots. Team17 is also a listed developer on PS4, though Bestwick doesn't offer any clues as to what the developer is working on. Team17 is currently fiddling around with Ouya developer kits, though "not for Worms specifically but for a number of possibilities."
David Hinkle03.26.2013Worms now on Facebook
Like SimCity before it, Worms has joined the ranks of other long, storied PC franchises that have been unable to resist the siren song of Facebook's business model. Replete with all the trappings of the platform (coins, experience stars, "Share" buttons, etc), Worms on Facebook allows for battle between two friends on their choice of two different islands using 19 weapons from the series' past.Individual Worms can be customized with 40 different hats, and players can create their own islands for their worms to hang out on between warfare, as well as for their friends to visit when they're feeling social. As is the way with these things, there are also tasks to be completed, daily rewards to reap and an immeasurable amount of work and productivity to be distracted from.
Jordan Mallory02.07.2013GOG celebrates Halloween wrong with anti-scary games sale
GOG.com is putting a selection of Halloween-themed games on sale today and tomorrow, the Halloween theme being they're "not scary." Each of the 16 spine-soothing games is priced 50% off, and the hair-settling assortment features entries from Simon the Sorcerer, Worms, and Rayman to name a few.If you ask us, dark magic, weapon-wielding invertebrates, and a legless, armless, and neckless man with feet, hands, and a head that move independent of his body are all plenty scary, thank you very much.

Mike Suszek08.12.2012Researchers create Meshworm robot, beat it up (video)
We've seen a number of options for controlling real worms, but never a worm robot, until now. Enter Meshworm, the latest creation from researchers at MIT, Harvard University and Seoul National University. The bot is made from "artificial muscle" composed of a flexible mesh tube segmented by loops of nickel / titanium wire. The wire contracts and squeezes the tube when heated by a flowing current, but cut the power and it returns to its original shape, creating propulsion in a similar way to its living kin. Taking traditional moving parts out of the equation also makes it pretty hardy, as proven by extensive testing (read: hitting it with a hammer). DARPA is known for getting its fingers in all sorts of strange pies, and it also supported this project. We can't see it being the fastest way of gathering intel, but the potential medical applications, such as next-gen endoscopes, sound plausible enough. Full impact tests in the video after the break.
