Canon EOS R6 review: A perfect hybrid shooter with a big video flaw

Canon’s EOS R6 is the full-frame camera everyone wished for instead of the EOS R. While the 20-megapixel sensor lacks resolution compared to rivals, it offers in-body stabilization, Dual Pixel autofocus and 10-bit 4K 60 fps video -- all killer specs for a $2,500 camera. On the downside, overheating issues limit recording and recovery times, meaning it’s not a great choice for folks who need to shoot more than 30 minute takes.

Canon takes on Sony's A7 series with the full-frame EOS R6 camera

Canon has unveiled the 20.1-megapixel EOS R6, the little brother to the gobsmacking 8K EOS R5 it unveiled at the same event today. At $2,499, the R6 is everything we hoped the EOS R would be (and more) and a much better rival to the Sony A7 III, Nikon Z6 and Panasonic S1.

Fujifilm's new flagship X-T4 camera has in-body stabilization

It was always going to be hard for Fujifilm to follow a well-reviewed camera like like the X-T3, especially when rumor sites have been creating unrealistic expectations. However, the X-T4 has finally arrived officially and on paper, it doesn't disappoint. While it uses the same 26.1-megapixel sensor as the X-T3, it now packs a feature that model was sorely missing: five-axis in-body stabilization (IBIS).

Sony's Crystal cinema display supports 16K, but could cost millions

Sony recently unveiled its Crystal LED screen for cinema exhibitors, but it has now announced that the tech will be available to consumers, as well. It will be selling the screens through specially trained and certified dealers in sizes up to 63 feet wide at 16K resolution, but unless you're a one-percenter, you probably won't be able to afford it.

Fujifilm launches the groundbreaking 102-megapixel mirrorless GFX100

While there are four full-frame mirrorless cameras battling it out for supremacy, Fujifilm is content to stick with APS-C and medium-format. Now, it has announced that its impressive flagship medium-format camera, the 102-megapixel GFX100, will soon go on sale. On top of the insane resolution -- the highest of any mirrorless or medium-format mirrorless camera -- the GFX100 has some seriously impressive specifications. The sensor is back-side illuminated, so you'll be able to crank up the ISO and capture clean images in low light. Fujifilm said it's the first medium-format camera with full-coverage phase-detect autofocus, with subject tracking and face/eye detection. Thanks to that system, it'll shoot up to to 210 percent faster than the contrast AF-equipped GFX 50R.

Panasonic S1 review: A perfect camera, except for its autofocus system

Panasonic is last to the full-frame mirrorless fight, but it's coming out swinging. In February, it unveiled the S1 and S1R cameras and both of them are tough, beastly models with impressive feature sets. The 24.2-megapixel S1 I'm reviewing here is the more affordable at $2,500, but it's also the most versatile, aimed equally at photographers and videographers. Feature-wise, it lines up closely with Sony's A7 III and the new Nikon Z6. The spec sheet is packed with things like 5-axis in-body stabilization, 10-bit internal 4K recording, a stellar electronic viewfinder and dual card slots. I had concerns about the price and autofocus system, however, so I was very curious to see how it stacked up against its main rivals in a full review. Now, let's find out.

Blackmagic BMPCC 4K review: A pint-sized video powerhouse

The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K) is Blackmagic's most desirable camera yet for budget filmmakers. Blackmagic has added features that video shooters have been demanding for years, and the price is right at a mere $1,300. But with powerful, video-friendly mirrorless cameras coming out seemingly every month, is there still a place for a dedicated cinema camera? As it happened, I was able to test it at the same time as the all-new and formidable Nikon Z7, Canon EOS R and Fujifilm X-T3 mirrorless cameras. After seeing those, and looking at what's missing in the BMPCC 4K, let's just say it's not for photographers who only dabble in video. For serious video creators, however, it's a different story. Demanding videographers will love the handling and usability, and it delivers where it counts in image quality. Best of all, it's cheaper than most video-capable mirrorless cameras.

Sony's new 4K projectors are designed for gaming and sports

Sony has unveiled three new 4K projectors with some nice features for gamers, sports fans and cinephiles, if you can afford them. The new models offer true 4K at 60 fps (not pixel-shifted 4K, as with Benq's HT-2550 and other budget models), 10-bit color and HDR capability, perfect for 4K Blu-ray and Netflix streaming. They're also better for gaming, thanks to a new "lag-reduction" feature, though Sony didn't specify exactly how much better. Finally, there's a new 4K "Motionflow" frame-smoothing feature, which is terrible for movies (seriously, turn that off) but better suited for fast-moving sports.

The first NVIDIA G-Sync HDR monitor is on sale, but it costs $1,999

NVIDIA G-Sync HDR gaming monitors promise great specs with required features like an iris-searing 1,000 nits of peak brightness, wide color gamut and high 144 Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, G-Sync HDR monitors from the likes of ASUS and Acer have been delayed multiple times, so we've yet to learn the price or whether the displays can live up to the hype. Now, Acer's Predator X27 has gone on pre-order at Newegg, so at least we know how much it'll cost: A mind-blowing $1,999.

Sharp's $77,000 camcorder shows that 8K is coming soon

Sharp has unveiled an 8K camcorder that is undoubtedly aimed at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but will be equally at home on a film set. Looking like an old-school ENG news camera, the 8C-B60A captures 8K, 10-bit 60fps video onto a large, Super 35mm sensor that's around the same size as the one on Red's Helium Weapon 8K. The custom 2TB SSD pack, developed in collaboration with Astrodesign, can hold about 40 minutes of 8K video.

BenQ’s 4K HDR monitor for graphics pros has a glare hood

It's easy and cheap to go buy yourself a 4K HDR TV with billions of colors these days, so why the heck is it so hard to find a PC monitor that can do the same? Benq's latest professional monitor, the SW271, shows how the economics of the PC business has a lot to do with it. The 27-inch, 4K monitor can accurately render 10-bit, HDR images for professionals working on photos, video or graphics, and is actually pretty cheap in its category at $1,100.

Panasonic's GH5 can now shoot widescreen 6K video

When Panasonic first unveiled its 4K powerhouse GH5 camera, it seemed to promise 6K, 30fps video. That only turned out to be a burst mode for stills, but now, Panasonic has actually made good by unveiling a 6K anamorphic, 4,992 x 3,744, 10-bit resolution video mode. On top of that, it made 4K more useful by unveiling an "intra-frame," full 4K, 10-bit option that compresses each frame individually at a robust 400 Mbps data rate.

  • Apple unlocks 'billions' more colors in latest iMacs

The latest retina iMacs already display colors very accurately, but with El Capitan, Apple now uses their full potential. According to German publication Mac & i, the new OS X version outputs 30-bits of color instead of 24-bits. That means that you can potentially see over a billion colors instead of 16 million on 2014 or 2015 5K iMacs, according to tests by Mac & i, though it may also work on other models. The feature only supports Apple's Preview and Photos for now, but may come to Final Cut Pro and other apps that can take advantage of it.
