Microsoft is merging its Windows and hardware teams

Panos Panay, Microsoft's hardware head honcho and the creator of Surface, is set to oversee the Windows team too. The company will reportedly roll the product and Windows groups into a single unit called Windows + Devices later this month with Panay at the helm. The move, which is part of a broader reorganization, is a strong indicator that Microsoft is eager to tie Windows and hardware more closely together.

  • Microsoft’s well-designed 2-in-1 Surface Pro X is up to $200 off

Microsoft's Surface Pro X is just a few months old, and it's already on sale. When it arrived in November, we scored it relatively high (73). We were pleased with its elegant, modern design and called it the best Snapdragon-powered PC around. One of the drawbacks was the high price, but now, Microsoft is discounting the Pro X by up to $200, so that's less of a factor.

  • Surface Laptop 3 review (15-inch): Bigger, but not always better

The 15" Surface Laptop 3 is a bit of a chameleon. It looks a lot like 13" Surface Laptop that we know and love, but under the hood it's another story entirely. Microsoft worked together with AMD to create a custom Ryzen chip with Radeon RX Vega graphics. For the first time, there's an ultraportable Surface with a decent GPU! But what does that actually mean? Well, it's complicated.

  • Surface Pro X review: Gorgeous hardware marred by buggy software

For years now, the Surface Pro has been the best Windows 2-in-1. It delivers a useful, familiar desktop environment for multitasking in a lightweight tablet body. But the line hasn't changed much physically since the Pro 4. A serious redesign is beyond overdue, and thankfully Microsoft is ready to show us something new.

If you're in the market for a good deal on a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, you might want to check out Best Buy. The retailer is offering a $50 gift card with the system, which starts at $1,199. The Engadget Podcast: Is Microsoft making better PCs than Apple?

Microsoft dropped a load of Surfaces on us last week, each impressive in their own right. We were wowed by the Surface Pro X, Pro 7 and Laptop 3 -- and of course, we can't wait to hear more about the dual-screen Surface Neo and Duo. It's hard not to compare all of those computers to Apple and its relatively straightforward lineup of Macbooks. This week on the Engadget podcast, reviews editor Cherlynn Low and I dive into one big question: Is Microsoft making better PCs than Apple? Listen below, or subscribe on your podcast app of choice. If you've got suggestions or topics you'd like covered on the show, be sure to email us or drop a note in the comments! (Apologies in advance for the the Skype audio quality on Cherlynn's side. Microsoft is right: Dual displays are a safer bet than folding screens

There were plenty of rumors leading up to yesterday's Microsoft event about a foldable Surface. But instead of getting a true foldable, with a single bendable screen, Microsoft showed us the Surface Neo and Duo, which feature dual screens connected by sturdy hinges. Sure, they may look a bit archaic compared to the folding OLED screens phone makers are rushing to put on shelves, but maybe folding screens are more trouble than they're worth. Using two screens still gives us a taste of a whole new generation of computing, where our devices can take on wild new forms, but it does so with fewer headaches.

Here's everything Microsoft announced at its Surface event

Microsoft held its annual Surface event today, but you definitely couldn't call it a by-the-numbers presentation. The tech veteran unveiled a flood of new devices, and updates to its existing Surface Laptop and Surface Pro lines were really just the start. It also introduced its first ARM-powered Surface Pro, true wireless smart earbuds and not one but two dual-screen devices -- including its first phone in years.

  • The Surface Laptop 3 vs. the competition: 13-inch workhorses

It's October once more, which means we get to look at some new machines from Microsoft. We're long accustomed to the hybrid Surface Pro line but we're also seeing the third iteration of the company's powerful and stylish Surface Laptop. The 15-inch version packs an AMD Ryzen CPU, but the 13-inch is no slouch thanks to its 10th-gen Ice Lake chip, the better to compete with machines like the XPS 13. To see how the smaller Surface Laptop stacks up against some of the leading 13-inch machines on the market, check out the table below and read our hands-on while you wait for our full review of the new computer later this year.

Surface Laptop 3 hands-on: Bigger, yet more refined

While we loved the original Surface Laptop, last year's sequel wasn't a huge improvement design-wise. The Surface Laptop 3 is another story entirely: there's a larger 15-inch model with a custom AMD chip and Radeon Vega graphics. It may not have the 2-in-1 capabilities of the Surface Pro or Book, but the Surface Laptop 3 continues to be a unique and compelling option in the crowded world of ultraportables.

Surface Neo and Duo hands-on: Our dual-screen future

We fully expected Microsoft to show off a dual-screen Surface today -- what we didn't expect was the company's return to smartphones in a bold new way. The Surface Neo, the larger laptop-sized device, and the Surface Duo, a more svelte phone, are bets on the future of dual-screen devices. They hearken back to the original Surface, which paved the way for the plethora of 2-in-1 and convertible PCs we see today.

Microsoft phones are back with the dual-screen Surface Duo

When Microsoft last built its own phones, we got the underwhelming Lumia 950 and 950 XL — a pair of devices that were meant to usher in the age of Windows 10 Mobile, but ultimately couldn't do the job. Now the company is trying to make its mark in mobile once again, but with a device we didn't exactly see coming: a dual-screen Android phone that looks just like a smaller Surface Neo.

Windows 10X will power dual-screen PCs from Microsoft, Dell, and more

Just how, exactly, will Windows work on dual-screen PCs like Microsoft's Surface concept? With Windows 10X, a new variant of the OS that's designed for machines with two displays. This isn't like Windows 10S, Microsoft's ill-fated and restrictive variant for the Surface Laptop (which has since become far more relaxed). Instead, 10X is more like a rethinking of the OS -- it'll be smarter about how you move apps across dual displays, and it'll be much more efficient with system resources. Exactly what you'll need to conserve battery life when you're running a thin machine with two displays.
