Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live: Updates on Call of Duty, Resident Evil and more new game reveals

Join us to watch the summer's big video game show on August 19 at 2PM ET.

It's summer in Cologne, Germany, and the video games are in full bloom. Gamescom 2025 officially kicked off on Tuesday, August 19 at 2PM ET with Opening Night Live, a showcase hosted by the folks behind The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, and you can watch it alongside the Engadget crew right here. The stream promises to feature the worldwide reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, plus fresh details on Ghost of Yotei, The Outer Worlds 2, Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f and Ninja Gaiden 4, and a live performance of music from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

A few of those reveals have already happened. We now know that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be out on November 14, and you can see its trailer here. We also have a few previews of games including Denshattack!, which we're expecting in early 2026, and Absolum, which is out in a few short months.

There's also a good chance — seriously, for real, no joke — that ONL 2025 will include a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong. I already feel like a clown for typing that sentence, but I stand by it, considering the evidence: Silksong will be playable on the Gamescom show floor and, as far as we know, it's coming out this year. Editor's note: Team Cherry has announced a special announcement on Thursday, which will probably be the Silksong release date... right?

... OK, that's less convincing than I thought it'd be. Regardless, Engadget contributing reporter Kris Holt and myself (senior editor Jess Conditt) will be here with a liveblog of Opening Night Live. Join us, watch along and feel free to mock us relentlessly if the whole Silksong thing doesn't pan out. We're used to it.

While you wait, check out the full Gamescom 2025 streaming schedule, which runs from August 19-25.

  • Likewise!

There's lots more to come from Gamescom, including two day-long Xbox streams, an indie showcase and that special announcement for a little game called Hollow Knight: Silksong on Thursday. You can check out our Gamescom guide for more details.

  • Thank you to everyone for joining us! I had fun hanging out with you, Kris. And we'll see you all for the next big video game stream, likely The Game Awards on December 11. Peace!

  • Whew, that was more packed than I expected! I thought it was a lovely little summer showcase, especially if we include all those cool games in the pre-show reel.

  • That's our show! What did you make of it, Jess?

ONL typically isn't as splashy as Summer Game Fest Live or The Game Awards, but I thought it was pretty solid overall.

  • And hey, that's one more action RPG. I think that puts the tally at seven, but I'll admit I lost count. There's a reason I do words for a living.

  • However, there is a massive tiger, which is pretty neat in its own right. Black Myth: Zhong Kui is coming.

  • Our one more thing comes from the Black Myth: Wukong folks! No skating or stories here, sadly.

  • For what it's worth, I just said, "oh shit" at the end of that Resident Evil: Requiem trailer. Delicious!

  • You're doing great, Kris.

  • *squeaks in mild terror* Evil!

  • When I say Resident, you say Evil!

    Resident!

    Resident!

...That doesn't really work in a one-way communication format, does it?

  • I don't really need to see more Ghost of Yōtei, if I'm honest. I was sold on that game as soon as it was announced. But! The Legends co-op mode coming next year is definitely good news.

  • Ghost of Yōtei will be gorgeous, guaranteed. I haven't been disappointed by a trailer yet.

  • Project Spectrum has my attention.

  • We've moved on to a PvPvE FPS from the team behind Delta Force, and I gotta say, this trailer looks rad.

  • Here's hoping!!

  • ...and what if that one more thing is a Skate Story release date? I haven't given up hope yet.

  • It feels like Resident Evil Requiem is going to close out the show. Unless, of course, there's a One More Thing... 👀

  • Here's something we knew was coming to the show: the opening cinematic for World of Warcraft: Midnight. Enjoy.

  • Cult of the Lamb just keeps getting cuter and creepier. The game's next bit of DLC, Woolhaven, is snowy and packed with fresh demonic delights. It's coming early 2026.

  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has been delayed a bunch of times. Glad it finally has a firm release date for the sake of everyone who's been looking forward to it.

  • Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 is coming out October 21! Hot. Or, deathly cold, I guess.

  • Do some stretches, refresh your cup, reposition your booty. Thank you for the built-in breaks, ONL.

  • [Obligatory Outer Worlds 2 trailer.]

  • Dang, I really love sci-fi spacesuit-based horror games, and this looks like a great one. It's coming September 5.

  • Speaking of Bloober Team... here's new Cronos: The New Dawn footage!

  • The Divine Comedy but make it a Soulslike (at least by the looks of things)? Sure, why not.

  • Konami is in the middle of a Silent Hill renaissance after the success of Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake, and f is due out in September.

  • Creepy and confusing, that's what I love about Silent Hill.

  • Silent Hill f is here to soothe my soul.

  • This NCSoft game is just every big-budget genre in one blob, backed by early 2000s alt rock. I said it and I meant it.

  • I will, I will!

Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden 4 bumps up our Soulslike/action RPG tally by one. If it's a third as good as Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, it'll be great.

  • omg Kris, YES.

  • That was a lovely performance. Guess I finally should go play Clair Obscur now, huh?

  • Is acoustic French opera going to be the next big trend with the kids? We can only hope.

  • I've always wanted to hear the Velvet Room song from Persona live! What's this weird game they're showing in the background?

  • Ah yes, I've been looking forward to this musical performance from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Cozy up, everyone.

  • Happy week-before-my-birthday to me! I'm so stoked on Unbeatable.

  • Unbeatable remains my most-anticipated game, and now it has a release date: November 6, 2025.

  • Glasshouse also looks rad.

  • This group of pro-democracy games is excellent. Just checked out The Darkest Files myself, digging it.

  • I'm going to politely ignore this next project from ZA/UM, thank you very much.

  • Any new Ron Gilbert game is worth checking out and I'm excited to see him try something different with Death by Scrolling. That one's going on my wishlist immediately.

  • Death by Scrolling is a fantastic game name because it really gets the point across.

  • John Carpenter's Toxic Commando was announced two years ago, if you can believe it. Or remember it.

  • World of Cranks — sorry, World of Tanks content just crashed through, as is the custom at Gamescom.

  • The crank was the true great circle all along.

  • I would absolutely play Great Circle on the Playdate. That crank would come in so handy!

  • I'll be really impressed if Indiana Jones and the Great Circle makes it to Playdate, though.

  • And Nintendo Switch 2 next year!

  • I kinda loved Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and now that it's on PS5 too, there's really no excuse not to play it yourself. This DLC doesn't look half bad, either.

  • I've been meaning to watch the first season of Fallout. I've got 122 days to do that before season two arrives. Should be enough time, but there are too many games/TV shows/movies!

  • December 17 is the premiere date of Fallout season two.

  • The Fallout show is firmly pivoting into New Vegas territory and we're getting our first look at the next season. The question is now, what will the canonical ending of New Vegas look like?

  • It's true, I will always hear the words, "world premiere" in the Xbox dude's voice.

  • I would definitely wear Ella Purnell's dress. Am I being influenced right now? Is this what it feels like? Gotta say, I don't hate it.

  • We hope you had a nice break, because now it's Fallout TV show time! No Walton Goggins on stage, shame.

  • And this is the stage where we let the mobile game and DLC trailers wash over us in a cool wave of pixels and shaders. Take a break, folks.

  • An Onimusha: Way of the Sword trailer brings the Soulsy/action RPG (yes, I'm lumping them together) count up to four. Thanks, Capcom!

  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword is doing its best to give us some good creepy vibes and we appreciate it.

  • No kidding, Jess. Going from a creepy Barbarian-like tunnel and spooky vibes overall to that self-promotion was a huge bummer!

  • Sjokz is just out here proving that she can do everything Geoff does, but in six-inch stilettos.

  • Wow. Gamescom just trolled me with that trailer for... itself. I was hyped on whatever spooky thing was happening, and then it was gone in a flash, like it never existed in the first place. Wow.

  • FF Online producer Naoki Yoshida is bringing the energy and the fit. I love the boots, the pants, the overshirt, all of it.

  • Props to anyone who attempts to have a translated conversation on stage in front of thousands of people and live-streaming cameras. That is stressful.

  • All right, who put Chocobos in my Monster Hunter Wilds?

  • Someone keeps interrupting Sjokz with all this Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV footage.

  • Geoff, my guy, fix your shirt collar.

  • It's Geoff time.

  • Battlestar Galactica might finally get the video game adaption it deserves

    BSG Scattered Hopes keyart

In the 16 years since Ronald D. Moore's take on Battlestar Galactica ended its official TV run in 2009, the most surprising thing about the series is that it hasn't inspired many great games. Sure, more than a few releases have carried the Battlestar Galactica name, but none of those have managed to capture what made the 2003 miniseries and later 2004 show so special. That might change early next year when Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes arrives.

Ahead of today's announcement of the game, publisher Dotemu gave the gaming press a chance to play an early build of Scattered Hopes. The first thing you need to know about the game is that it's made by Alt Shift, the studio behind 2019's Crying Suns. Alt Shift doesn't shy away from the fact Crying Suns was inspired by Battlestar Galactica, and the studio's love for the source material shows in its new project. Even in the version I played, which was missing gameplay features and had yet to be properly balanced, Scattered Hopes feels like BSG's three-hour pilot episode recreated in game form.

  • American Truck Simulator but make it Twisters? Okay, Road Kings has my attention... At least until the next trailer.

  • Truck sims and Sonic the Hedgehog. Welcome to Gamescom, folks.

  • I make that two Soulsy games so far, and the main show hasn't even started yet.

  • Definitely! I loved the analog horror but in space vibe of that trailer.

  • What were you saying about Soulslikes, Kris? lol

  • I just looked up ROUTINE after that little trailer, too. Spooky first-person space horror? Yes, please.

  • PVKK is the new game from the Dome Keeper crew and I'm very jazzed on it. Super detailed planetary defense maintenance is, apparently, my jam.

  • I'll set the over/under on the number of action RPGs and Soulslikes we see today at 11.

  • What do you get when you mix BioShock with Left 4 Dead and Civilization? Valor Mortis from Lyrical Games, it looks like.

  • As usual for streams like these, the pre-show is packed with new game trailers and announcements. I have a feeling the main show is going to roll at a slower pace than this, but I really love seeing all the fresh ideas coming our way in video game land. For example — Long Gone, this pixelated zombie game, looks great!

  • Denshattack! does indeed look rad! I'm looking forward to checking that one out! (The extra exclamation marks are unnecessary but seemed fitting!)

  • So this wild train-jumping skateboard-style game, Denshattack!, looks fabulous. I got to see it ahead of the show in a briefing with Barcelona indie studio Undercoders, and you can read more about it here.

  • I am an uncomplicated person. I hear "LucasArts" and my ears perk up. I never played Outlaws and Nightdive does great work on remasters so now that one's absolutely on my radar.

  • Well, I'm definitely cool (?) enough to remember Battlestar Galactica! This looks dope.

  • I'll admit I enjoyed that first Bubsy game when I was a child and didn't know any better.

  • ... I'm not old or cool enough to remember Bubsy.

  • OK OK, time to turn off the kpop and unmute the ONL stream. Pre-show, let's go!

  • I admire your dedication, Nate.

  • The Last of Us Part 3 reveal, anyone? No? Didn't think so. I'll leave you all to it! 🖤

  • 🤘🤘🤘

  • From the pre-show countdown it looks like we're going to be starting a little later than promised. Bear with us for another five minutes! If you're tired of the hold music on the stream, feel free to join me in listening to some ITZY.

  • I'm ready to devour anything and everything about Silent Hill f and Resident Evil Requiem! Yum.

  • Hey, folks! Hope you're all ready to see some cool-ass video games. I sure am.

There's going to be plenty to talk about just based on everything that's been confirmed to show up, but it's always the surprises that turn out to be the most exciting parts of a show like this.

I have my fingers and toes crossed for a Skate Story release date. What are you hoping to see, Jess?

  • Who's the clown now, huh? I would like to point out that until today, I've never teased Silksong in a meaningful way before a gaming stream. But now that I did in the intro up there, we're getting a whole show about the dang thing in two days' time. Confirmed, I am a video game prophet. I'm off to start my cult, but first, let's watch Opening Night Live 2025 together. Pre-show starts in 25 mins!

  • We're now just half an hour away from the pre-show starting. One thing we now know for sure is that Silksong will have its own dedicated stream on Thursday, August 21 at 10:30AM ET.

  • We have a long wishlist of things we're hoping to see today, some of them more fanciful than others. We know from host Geoff Keighley that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Ghost of Yotei, The Outer Worlds 2, Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f and Ninja Gaiden 4 will be featured. There will also be a premiere for World of Warcraft's Midnight expansion cinematic, and almost certainly a trailer for the next season of the Fallout TV show.

  • Good morning, afternoon or evening, depending on where in the world you are! Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 kicks off officially at 2PM ET, though there'll be a half-hour pre-show starting at 1:30PM ET.
