Facebook status updates, wall posting and payments currently down for some (Update: Facebook says it's back to normal)
Facebook appears to still be working should you visit its highly-trafficked URL, but attempts to do much of anything on the site this morning are fruitless. Repeated attempts by Engadget staffers confirms what we've been seeing on Twitter: status updates, wall posting and payments are all offline. Facebook's developer page confirms the latter, noting that it's been offline since at least 4:46AM PDT. Curiously, some folks on our staff are able to post to friends' walls, but some cannot -- it looks like services are either returning or hanging on for some.
Facebook's developer site shows a massive spike in users errors starting at 5AM PDT this morning, as well as a huge uptick in API response time starting around the same time. There's no word from Facebook just yet on when functionality will normalize, but we've reached out for more information. In the meantime, maybe...keep an eye on Facebook's Twitter account?
Update: Status updates and wall posting seems to be functional once more (as evidenced in the image below the break). According to Facebook's developer status page, though, payments are still offline for now.
Update 2: A Facebook spokesperson tells Engadget that things are 100 percent back to normal, and blames this morning's hiccup on an issue encountered during maintenance. "Earlier this morning, while performing some network maintenance, we experienced an issue that prevented some users from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We're sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused."
