GM spends $2.2 billion to set up an EV-only plant in Detroit

GM just demonstrated that electric vehicles can create jobs in addition to taking them away. The automaker has revealed plans for a $2.2 billion investment that will turn its Detroit-Hamtramck facility into its first assembly plant completely devoted to EVs. When it's fully ready, it'll create over 2,200 "good-paying" jobs, GM claimed. The factory will produce a "variety" of electric trucks and SUVs. While GM didn't outline the full product mix, it noted that production on its first electric pickup truck will start at the plant in late 2021. The Cruise Origin self-driving shuttle should start production soon afterward.

You can actually buy Origin's new 'Big O' console and PC monster

Remember Origin PC's ridiculous franken-gaming-machine that combined an Xbox One X, PlayStation 4 Pro, Nintendo Switch and Windows-powered PC? At the time, it was just a marketing gimmick designed to celebrate the company's 10th birthday and the half-PC, half-Xbox 360 it made back in 2010. The stunt was a huge success, though, so Origin PC has made a new version that people can actually buy. Something in the same vein, anyway.

‘Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’ is available today

The latest game in the long running Plants vs. Zombies series has arrived for PS4, Xbox and PC. Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a third-person shooter, but it's cartoony enough for older children; EA calls it "our biggest and most accessible shooter ever." Players can compete in head-to-head multiplayer matches and explore new areas solo or in split-screen and online co-op modes.

Origin EVO16-S review: A powerful gaming laptop with a bigger screen

When NVIDIA unveiled RTX ray-tracing GPUs for laptops, a lot of new models launched: 40 of them in all. Origin, a company best known for its customized models, tried to separate itself from the pack with an interesting hook. Rather than releasing a 15.6- or 17.1-inch model like everyone else, it unveiled something in between -- the 16.1-inch EVO16-S. While packing a bigger screen, it's just as thin and no heavier than most 15.6-inch laptops, but much lighter than any 17.1-inch model. Packing up to a 9th-generation Intel six-core CPU and GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU, it crams in top-flight gaming performance and ray-tracing, to boot. The EVO16-S is also pretty well-priced compared to rival models with smaller screens, so let's find out how it measures up.

Origin's EVO16-S takes 16-inch gaming laptops to a lighter place

Origin is trying to appeal to both the weight-conscious and power-seeking laptop crowd at CES this year. The most interesting model is the EVO16-S, a gaming PC with a 16.1-inch screen that weighs just 4.5 pounds and is 0.78 inches thick -- less than many "lightweight" 15.4-inch models. Despite the petite size, it packs impressive specs, including a 6-core Intel i7-8750H CPU, NVIDIA RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics and up to 32GB of RAM.

Epic Games will take on Steam with its own digital store

Buoyed by Fortnite's phenomenal success over the last year or so, Epic Games is launching its own digital store to take on the likes of Steam, EA's Origin and Blizzard's Battle.net. However, Epic is giving developers a higher revenue share than most of its competitors. Much like creators who sell items through the Unreal Engine Marketplace, developers will keep 88 percent of revenue and Epic will take a 12 percent cut.

Watch the first trailer for YouTube sci-fi thriller series 'Origin'

YouTube's Originals haven't hit the critically-acclaimed highs of rivals Netflix and Hulu's shows, but it's not for want of trying. Its latest stab at creating the next must-watch streaming series is Origin, a sci-fi drama that borrows the premise of Passengers, but jettisons the romance in favour of suspense.

Origin's EON15-S is one of the lightest gaming laptops yet

Origin recently launched a pretty lightweight Max-Q gaming laptop, but with its latest model, it's pushing the form factor even more. The new 15.6-inch EON-15S is just an inch thick and tips the scale at a mere 3.4 pounds, but it packs up to an Intel Core i9-8950HK 6-core CPU and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics. What's more, there's a special toggle that lets you get up to eight hours of battery life, presumably by throttling back the CPU and GPU.

Origin Access Premier service gives you EA's latest games

Whatever you think of EA's Origin Access, it has an obvious limitation: you're getting the back catalog, not the latest titles. You'll have a better option going forward, though. EA has revealed Origin Access Premier, a new subscription option that will provide the publisher's hotter titles to Windows gamers before their official launch date. It'll start with Madden NFL 2019 (yes, it's returning to PC) and will include big-name releases like Battlefield V, FIFA 19 and Anthem. It's not yet clear how much this will cost, but it'll be available later in the summer. There's little doubt that EA is matching Microsoft's same-day availability for titles on Xbox Game Pass.
