Olympus rolls out PC app that turns some of its cameras into webcams

Olympus may be selling its camera business — to the same company that bought Sony's VAIO PC division — but it's not abandoning its products just yet. It has just released a new beta application called OM-D Webcam, which gives Olympus cameras webcam capabilities for livestreaming or video chats when attached to a PC via their USB-C tether. While the application definitely sounds useful in an era of Zoom work conferences and online classes, not all Olympus users will be able to take advantage of it.

How to buy a mirrorless camera in 2020

Two crucial things happened in the camera world in 2019: mirrorless cameras took over from DSLRs and the industry as a whole had its worst year in a decade. So what does that mean for you, the potential camera buyer? Manufacturers are pulling out all the stops to lure you away from your smartphone, so a lot of great new mirrorless cameras have come out in the last year. And, as Canon just announced, more exciting models are on the way.

Olympus E-M1 III review: Fast, but way behind flagship camera rivals

Amid the excitement of so many new and interesting camera models, one company has been left out of the discussion: Olympus. Unlike its main rival, Panasonic, it has stuck to the Micro Four Thirds sensor and not jumped on the full-frame bandwagon. And while it released the larger, more professionally oriented E-M1X camera, it didn't represent a major upgrade on the 2016 E-M1 Mark II model. Now, Olympus finally has a genuine successor. Like the E-M1X, the E-M1 Mark III promises even more speed and top-notch in-body stabilization, this time all packed into a much smaller and even more rugged body. Disappointingly, though, it has the same 20.4-megapixel sensor as before, and for an $1,800 camera, it's lagging behind rivals from Sony, Panasonic and Fujifilm in certain features. On top of that, Olympus has had a tough time financially of late. I'm in Costa Rica with the E-M1 Mark III, and I'm going to find out if Olympus is doing enough to survive.

Olympus' OM-D E-M5 Mark III camera is small and shoots fast

While other companies are touting full-frame and compact APS-C cameras, Olympus is still squarely in the Micro Four Thirds camp. With launch of its latest mirrorless camera, the company is playing to the strength of that smaller format: speed. The 20-megapixel OM-D E-M5 Mark III can shoot at up to 6 fps with continuous autofocus and the mechanical shutter, 10 fps with the electronic shutter enabled, and 30 fps with no autofocus -- nearly double the speeds of the last model.

Do Micro Four Thirds cameras have a future?

For years, photographers and industry pundits have predicted the demise of the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera system. Many believe that the smaller sensor has been superseded by APS-C cameras and the ever-growing lineup of full-frame mirrorless shooters. "Not suddenly, but slowly over the course of the next couple of years," photographer and author Tony Northrup said in a YouTube video last October. The upload, which attracted more than 200,000 views, triggered a wage of counterarguments from prominent MFT users like Peter Forsgård, Joseph Ellis and others. Six months later, there's still no consensus.

  • A brief history of mirrorless cameras

Mirrorless cameras are here to stay. The argument to own one isn't only about them being small and lightweight anymore, because nowadays many mirrorless shooters rival DSLRs in image quality -- something that would've been unimaginable a decade or so ago. Today, the likes of the Sony A7 III, Nikon Z7, Canon EOS R and Panasonic S1R are some of the best cameras, period. But none of these flagships would exist today if it weren't for the hundreds of Micro Four Thirds and APS-C models that came before them, some of which are still popular and have paved the way for manufacturers to turn photographers and videographers alike into mirrorless fans.

How to pick a lens for your mirrorless camera in 2019

When buying a mirrorless camera, there's an equally crucial side question: What lenses do I need for this thing? The glass you place in front of that sensor plays a key role in how your photos or videos look and what kind of shooting you can do. It's a complex decision too. You need to consider factors like sharpness, distortion, speed, prime or zoom and, most important, price. In this guide, I'll touch on all that and look at some of the best lenses for Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras.

Olympus's flagship mirrorless camera doubles down on speed

Olympus has unveiled the OM-D E-M1X, a pro-level mirrorless camera with very rapid shooting speeds and an all-new image stabilizer that will help both video shooters and photographers. Teased earlier this month, it's essentially a larger version of OM-D E-M1 Mark II with some extra professional features, but not a lot of new technology (and a similarly awkward name). It packs the same 20.4-megapixel sensor and 18 fps shooting speeds (with AF and AE) as the OM-D E-M1 II, or an exceptional 60 fps with those settings locked.

Olympus is launching a high-end sports-oriented camera this month

All the camera excitement of 2018 mostly bypassed Olympus, but the venerated camera maker is looking to start 2019 with a bang. It will unveil what looks to be a very fast, rugged sports-oriented camera -- possibly a successor to the OM-D EM-1 Mark II -- on January 24th, 2019.

The best cameras to give as gifts

Talented creators with an eye for photos can't live by smartphones alone. If you have a special someone who wants to take portraits and action shots or make short 4K films, no gift will be more appreciated than a decent camera. We know these things are expensive, though, so we made a list of six models, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and compacts, that you might actually be able to afford.

    The best cameras under $1,000

Enthusiast cameras like Sony's A7R III, the Nikon D850 and Fujifilm's X-H1 get a lot of attention. The good news is that nowadays, you can spend less than $1,000 for a camera body and get almost as much as you would with a model with three times the price. Cameras like Nikon's D5600, the Sony A6300 and Fujifilm's X-T20 handle both photos and video superbly. As you'd expect, though, each model has a different combination of strengths and weaknesses. This guide is meant to help you figure out which best fits your needs.
