The Verge TS Ultra electric motorcycle is entirely too fast

The 201HP Verge TS Ultra is not built for comfort. It is built to accelerate a human body from a standstill to freeways speeds in less time than it has taken you to read these two sentences.

Android Auto is coming to Harley-Davidson motorcycles

With the exception of a couple of late stragglers, Android Auto has become commonplace on most cars. Not so with motorcycles. But that's about to change with Harley-Davidson announcing that it plans to update some of its existing motorcycles to support Android Auto.

  • BMW hints at the future of electric motorcycles with the Vision DC Roadster

BMW Motorrad has an electric scooter. The capable and fun C Evolution. An outstanding vehicle I had the pleasure of riding around on in LA. But as far as full-sized bikes go, Zero Motorcycles still rules that market while we wait for Harley-Davidson to start selling its own EV. But the German motorcycle maker has been taking its time going full size. Hopefully, the Vision DC Roadster concept is a sign of things to come.

Triumph is developing its first electric motorcycle

British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has announced a new program that'll help speed up its development of electric motorbikes. The project, working title TE-1, aims to develop an electric motorcycle powertrain in just two years, and it's got some pretty heavyweight partners involved to help it achieve this goal.

Honda's big EV push now includes dirt bikes and scooters

Honda has shown an affinity for electric cars as of late, but what about the motorcycle crowd? Don't worry, you'll get your fix soon. The automaker has unveiled prototypes for both the CR Electric dirt bike (above) and the Benly Electric delivery scooter (below), offering a peek at how it will approach emissions-free transportation on two wheels. Honda didn't dive into the specs, but the CR Electric appears based on the CRF450 and uses a Mugen-developed motor along with Showa inverted forks.

Ducati confirms plans for an electric motorcycle

Ducati has hinted at a desire to make electric motorcycles before, but it's committing in a more substantial way. Company chief Claudio Domenicali told guests at a Spanish event that the "future is electric" and the company was "not far from starting production" on its own two-wheeled EV. Regional Managing Director Eduoard Lotthé had hinted at plans in 2017, but this is about as official as it gets.

Novus' $35,000 electric motorcycle oozes sinister style

If you've ever seen a spy movie, you'll know that there's normally a rogue assassin character riding around on a motorbike in head-to-toe leather. We're never quite sure of their allegiance until they swoop in and save the day in the final moments of the film. Give it a couple of years, and the sort of bike they're riding around on will probably look a lot like Novus' new prototype.

  • Ural’s electric motorcycle with a sidecar is weird but fun

Electric motors are extremely compact compared to their combustion-engine counterparts. As long as you have room for batteries and a controller, you can pretty much put them anywhere. That's what sidecar-motorcycle maker Ural did for its electric concept vehicle based on its C-T bike. It's a one-off curiosity that blends the latest in powertrains with a design that's been around since before World War I.

Jarvish's smart motorbike helmets hit Kickstarter with deep discounts

Jarvish announced two new smart motorcycle helmets earlier this year -- the Jarvish X and Jarvish X-AR, which offer a plethora of helpful riding features, such as voice activation and support for Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa, a 2k front-facing camera, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a retractable heads up display in the more expensive model, a lightweight carbon fiber design and hours of battery life. These are, arguably, the smartest helmets on the market. Now, bikers can finally put their money down to get in line to own one themselves -- and for a big discount on regular retail prices.

Husqvarna's first electric motorcycle is the EE 5 mini dirt bike

Husqvarna may be a familiar name in the motorcycle world, but it hasn't done much to embrace electric motorcycles. It will soon, though -- it's launching its first e-motorbike in the form of the EE 5. The machine is ultimately a classic mini dirt bike with knobbed tires, durable forks and an exposed motor. The difference, of course, is the choice of powerplant -- it's using a 5kW (6.7HP) electric motor paired with a 907Wh battery. Husqvarna pitchis it as an "easy-to-use" machine that lets newcomers try offroading "with confidence."

  • The Ducati Multistrada 1260S is ready for anything

"Let's go on an adventure," I whispered to the Ducati Multistrada 1260S. For many, motorcycles represent something more than a simple means of transportation. It's everything from the idea of embracing a counterculture (the movie Easy Rider cemented that lifestyle) to the feeling of being closer to the world while traveling. You can get this from almost any bike. What the Multistrada excels at being is the bike you need in almost any situation.

Jarvish’s carbon fiber smart helmets put Alexa on your head

The history of smart motorcycle helmets is a mixed bag, from clip-on heads-up displays to the Skully debacle that ended with a great piece of hardware being cratered by financially irresponsible founders. But technology moves on, and next year a new smart helmet from Jarvish will be vying for the heads of nerdy motorcyclists.

BMW developed a self-driving motorcycle to further its safety efforts

This week, BMW Motorrad showed off a self-driving version of its R1200GS, a motorcycle that it spent more than two years developing. You can see in the video below that the motorcycle, sans rider, can start, accelerate, lean into turns and stop all on its own. But don't expect to see this bike on the roads anytime soon. The company explained that it created the self-driving motorcycle not for consumers but to learn more about how it can implement new safety features.

  • Curtiss

Curtiss' second electric motorcycle boasts a so-called V8 battery

Given that electric-powered bikes have dwelled in the background of the automotive scene since the 1890s, it's about time that motorcycle manufacturers took the hint from the explosion of EV cars and trucks to launch their own versions. Classic American cycle company Curtiss introduced its all-electric Zeus concept in May, and today, they've unveiled their follow-up, the appropriately-named Hera -- which the company claims has the "'world's first V8 battery." Which, yes, is nonsense, but given that the Zeus boasts one upwards of 14.4 kWh, this new motorcycle could pack a lot of power.

Finally, though, it looks as if the LiveWire will be available next year.

Zero motorcycles’ modular battery is one pricey upgrade

On a spreadsheet, electric motorcycles can be a tough sell. For starters, gas-powered bikes get outstanding mileage. So while hybrids and electric cars can save a driver money in the long run, that doesn't really apply to motorcycles. Instead, there's the warm fuzzy feeling that you're doing something good for the environment. In addition, you can silently cruise around without frightening the neighborhood pets with a bombastic exhaust. Oh and there's also the incredible electric torque.
