Bugatti revives its toy Baby car with a grown-up carbon fiber version

In 1922, automobile designer Ettore Bugatti wanted to create a present for his four-year-old son Roland. In a move putting him into 'best dad ever' territory, Bugatti designed the Baby: an electric half-scale model of the famous Type 35 racecar. Nearly one hundred years later, the Bugatti company is reviving the Baby concept with a scaled up version dubbed the Baby II.

  • How Bugatti built the Centodieci hypercar in six months

During Monterey Car Week there's no shortage of nostalgia. Both the Pebble Beach and Quail gatherings are magnets for almost any vintage car you can imagine. So it made sense for Bugatti to unveil its new Centodieci hypercar, a nod to the iconic EB110, there.

Bugatti unveils a $33,000 EV for (rich) kids

For its 110th birthday, Bugatti is going back to its roots. The French car manufacturer is digging up the Bugatti Type 35, the company's famous racing car also called the Bugatti Baby, and giving it a modern makeover. The limited-run Bugatti Baby II features an electric powertrain, driving modes for kids and adults, and a price tag of 30,000 euros (about $33,000). The creation from Bugatti and Junior Classics will be on display at the Geneva International Motorshow this month.

Watch Bugatti test the first 3D-printed brake caliper

Back at the start of 2018, Bugatti revealed that it was working on the first 3D-printed brake caliper. Now that the year is winding to a close, it's finally ready to show the caliper in action. Bugatti has posted a video (below) of a test that simulated braking at speeds as high as 249MPH. As you might imagine, it was quite the show -- the disc alone reached temperatures up to 1,877F, and there were plenty of flames and sparks as the caliper and disc reached their limit.

See the stylish and confusing vehicles from the Paris Auto Show

The Paris Auto Show 2018 may have been devoid of big vehicle launches, but that doesn't mean it was boring. We saw a mix of cool (the Peugeot E-Legend), weird (Renault's EZ-ULTIMO), quick (Infiniti's Project Black S) and long-range (the Kia e-Niro). Other vehicles appeared in public for the first time, like Bugatti's 1,500 horsepower, $5.8 million, 236 mph W16 Divo, and Mercedes EQC 400 SUV launching in 2020. Mercedes incredible electric supercar, the EQ Silver Arrow concept (above), also made its car show debut. Here's a petite sampling of the most interesting cars from the show.

This driveable Bugatti Chiron is made out of 1 million Lego blocks

Lego's Bugatti Chiron Technic kit is a stylish recreation of the sports car at ⅛ scale. But what about making one at 1:1 scale? The wholesome toy company teamed up with the automaker to create a life-size model of the performance vehicle out of Technic blocks. And it works! The recreation drives itself, though its "engine" made of over 2,300 Lego set motors ekes out an estimated 5.3 horsepower. That doesn't quite reach the blistering speeds of its real-life version, the but the Lego Bugatti Chiron is a pretty neat execution of a dream to build a car completely out of bricks.

  • Bugatti's 'Gran Turismo' concept car hints at life beyond the Veyron

Bugatti's monstrous 1,000HP-plus Veyron supercar may be riding into the sunset, but you won't have to wait long to get a hint of what the exotic automaker is planning next. The company has taken the wraps off of its own Gran Turismo virtual concept car, the not-so-cleverly-titled Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo. This in-game prototype is a direct hint at both the brand's "future design language" and the kind of performance it's aiming for in an ideal world. Not surprisingly, that means something supremely quick. On a simulated Le Mans track, the VGT is powerful enough (thanks largely to its W16 engine) that it can reach 250MPH four times each lap -- ultimately, it's about as fast as the speediest real-world Le Mans prototypes.

  • Chinese university students build KIRF Bugatti Veyron all-electric vehicle from discarded cigarette packs (video)

In order to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking (or to make cigarettes look even cooler -- we're not sure which) a group of five students at Xi'an University in China have built an all-electric Bugatti Veyron entirely out of old cigarette boxes. This bad boy is the same size as the world-renowned touring car -- a feat which took 10,280 packs of cigarettes and eight months to assemble. While we have no idea what the top speed is, we're guessing it's nowhere near that of the original. Check out the video after the break.

  • Forza 3 welcomes 1000-horsepower Bugatti Veyron supercar

You've never heard of the Bugatti Veyron, the latest addition to the Forza Motorsport 3 lineup of cars? Neither had we; it's not the type of car we're likely to spot around town. If the above video – detailing the process used to convert the Veyron's various "gauges" and "horsepowers" into equally alluring ones and zeroes – is to be believed, the Veyron is "probably the most coveted car in the world right now." Coveted is one thing; obtainable another. The $1.4 million, nearly 1000-horsepower Veyron is rare. Rare like: Forza developers Turn 10 tracked one down in southern California with the help of Bugatti but they themselves didn't get a chance to drive it! So if you want to know what it's like to drive one, you have a couple options: Read our sister site Autoblog's First Drive with the Veyron; Go back in time and put one penny in a savings account and, upon returning to your own time, reap the rewards of compound interest; Or you could play Forza Motorsport 3 and crash the thing straight into a wall. And then rewind it. Stay tuned for our interview with Forza 3's game director Dan Greenawalt, who shares some details on the Veyron, on the game's second disc, the inclusion of damage modeling in Sony's long-time-coming Gran Turismo 5, and what type of game he thinks Turn 10 would make if it changed genres.

  • Casa Bugatti's Vera electric kettle proves that even boiling water can be interesting, pricey

Know what we really love? Tea kettles. The thing is, plenty of them look like there was roughly zero thought put into their design -- and we've all gotten into the habit of accepting those 3 or 4 basic designs offered to us. No more. Bugatti's got a wholly new approach to boiling water on the horizon, in the form of the Vera. It's beautifully designed, it's got a nice array of electronic timing functions -- but the bells and whistles are just icing on this beautiful, delicious cake. The Vera kettle will be available this September, for around $300. [Via Unplggd]

  • Wrightspeed SR-71 electric car will do 0-60 in 2.5 seconds

Remember when the Wrightspeed X1 electric car beat both a Ferrari 360 Spyder and Porsche Carrera GT off the line? Well, ex-Cisco and DEC engineer Ian Wright is back with his SR-71 that he says will do 0-60 in a brain-numbing 2.5 seconds. The new electric speed dart should show up in about 18 months and could even get a street-legal version in 36 months. That's a long time to wait, sure, but a faster-than-Bugatti EV at a fraction of the cost could just be worth it.
