Yamaha rolls out YSP-800 Digital Sound Projector
As previously noted, Yamaha has been working on a more affordable successor to its $1,300 YSP-1
Digital Sound Projector, and it looks like it's about to land in Europe. The new YSP-800 is a similar compact system
that simulates 5.1 surround sound without requiring you to set up speakers all over a room. The newer model has a
somewhat lower output, at 82 watts instead of 120, which should still fill most home theaters or living rooms. Other
features include an automatic sweet-spot setup and "Night Listening Enhancer," which automatically lowers the volume
and enhances speech, so that you can keep Jerry Bruckheimer's explosions from waking the kids, but not miss any of the
gripping dialogue. The YSP-800 is expected to be out in Europe this month for €699 ($866).

I don't like it.
I have a pioneer 7.1 reciever with 2 Klipsch F-3 floorstanding speakers and 5 satellites. I think my stuff cost a little more than this thing, but rest assured, the sound quality I get out of the dolby Pro Logic II is ridiculous.

Its terribly useful in some cases where you really can't place speakers all around the living room

I have the ysp-1, and to properly set it up was time consuming, and required moving books around in a bookshelf to create a flat surface for sound reflection. It does require flat walls that reflect sound, but since each "beam" can be equalized, levelled, aimed (both side to side and up and down) and delayed according to reflectivity and distance the material doesn't need to be identical. Adding an automatic setup feature would be great.
I don't get the same degree of surround (stuff will never sound like it's right behind me for example, only slightly behind me and to the sides) that I get from the denon/def tech multispeaker surround system in my basement, but it's very engaging. It's great for a smaller room that fits the installation profile where you don't want to have a bunch of speakers hanging around. The YSP-1 fits perfectly under a 42" plasma. With a good sub and a decent panel, you get a decent home theater experience without the wires and hassle. For me the lack of wires and clutter is worth a little extra cash.

Look Ma, no wires!
I tried both the Bose 3.2.1 and the YSP1 and the YSP won hands down. It obviously cannot match sound from satellite speakers but then it has no/nada/niente wires ;)
Even my gf loves it!!
