Anita Sarkeesian speech canceled following threats, safety concerns

Feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian has canceled an appearance at Utah State University following death threats where the institution could not implement stronger safety controls.

"Sarkeesian was informed that, in accordance with the State of Utah law regarding the carrying of firearms, if a person has a valid concealed firearm permit and is carrying a weapon, they are permitted to have it at the venue," according to a USU statement.

Sarkeesian is best known as the producer and host of the "Tropes vs. Women" series of videos, which dissect the portrayal of women in video games. She also recently did a presentation examining the campaign against her since the series began.

The Salt Lake Tribune points out that a 2004 law prohibits enacting policy that "in any way inhibits or restricts the possession or use of firearms." The threat against Sarkeesian was sent yesterday, demanding the university cancel the appearance or the person claimed they would enact "the deadliest school shooting in American history."
